best bottom for mushy waves
« on: October 31, 2014, 02:07:54 PM »
While many of you may think this belongs in the hot chicks thread   I am talking about  sups.. say all a 31-32 inch wide board
So who favors a concave  front of middle to a  double concave in the tail 1/3 of the board on 2-4 mushers?
or concave  to double concave with  the concaves being at a slight v? as opposed to cut into a  flat bottom.
Deeper or shallower concave? Deeper= greater than .25 inches
what about flat to  deep (1/2")  V bottom edge to edge at the tail  box
what about   tails square rounded rounded and winged ?

Now same questions for moderately fast smallish barrels 3-6?
so how much difference do these bottoms make

Whatever fanatic Allwave has as a bottom works insanely well in mushy waves
9'1 Allwave, 9'8 nsp cocomat
Starboard whopper, 10'6 Flywave, J. Lewis Stun Gun 9'7, Merrick Surftech 9'1

Respect all styles

In mushy slow waves speed is your best friend.  For max speed I would go with a rolled belly hull up front, parallel outline and wide tail.

Picking a board based on type of concave, is like buying a car based on kicking the tires.

Buy based on rocker and template.

I understand many buy based on concave because it's something easy to see

concaves are for control, not speed.

You want a rolled belly so you get up to speed quickly.  Think Baked Potato.  The following video does a great job of explaining the design philosophy of the rolled belly, rails and bottom contours:

5-5 x 36 liters  ..ya right!  Thanks Anon.  I do like this guy's presentations. You or someone else here has linked them before. I am not exposed to other surfers so a lot of this feels like totally new information.

I agree that rocker and profile is profile is probably more important than bottom shape.  1) Flatter rocker in slower waves  2) Wider tail in slower waves, and 3) Belly in the nose cuz who doesn't like a little belly?

Yes he's talking about surfboards but the same principles apply to a SUP, just on a larger scale. Take a look at the Simmons type SUP boards.  My Phoenix has the same design elements discussed in the video: rolled vee belly, down rails etc.  This makes the board very fast and maneuverable.  It is an amazing board in slow, mushy waves.

Had a board with pronounced belly in the nose.  To me it felt like it was plowing on take off rather than popping up onto a plane.  Kinda felt "sticky".  That board was surfed from the tail, what was happening in the nose was irrelevant after takeoff.

Does seem like most boards today have a deep concave underfoot moving to a double concave tail.  Seems like the concave would effectively remove rocker underfoot, or flatten out the rocker.

Although I agree rocker and outline are primary, the problem I have with rocker in general is you kinda have to guess what is going on. Short board rocker vs reduced vs low entry...but no numbers anywhere.  That is one nice thing about a machine shaped custom.  Aku shaper file and 3d render are pretty easy figure out.

It's all about finding a balance between being able to turn the board and gaining and keeping speed. These 2 factors are always fighting each other. The short story is the most width (nose middle and tail) you can keep with the most parallel outline and least amount of rocker and still meet some semblance of turning characteristics to suit you will be the recipe. A flatter rocker with tail V is generally better than more rocker and no V in the back. Then you introduce concave into the different planes the things start changing dramatically, sometimes for the worst if it isn't subtle enough. The bottom line (no pun) is that the faster and more efficient the water can be released the better.

8-4 X 31 1\4.  Round (wide) Diamond Tail Quad Tom Whitaker

concaves are for control, not speed.

Yup, concave add lift and stability at the sacrifice of some speed.  Great for the tip of a nose-rider.  +1 on Mini Simmons for mushy waves.

Concaves when placed properly add to speed. What they do is straighten out water flow through the bottom. They can negatively affect control by being TOO efficient with the water flow and not allow the board to turn and also become unstable at speed. It all comes down to placement, depth and the other design factors of the board and how everything integrates
