Hey Kris, did you meet Mr. Magoo at the Mooch Memorial?  I know that he does it, but up in HMB.

I've dabbled, using a 10ft plastic waveWitch SOT.
Only been barreled once, but that just gives something to chase after, like catching a WSB.
Mt boat is more for slow swells, i can't carve it very well. But in longboard type situations it can be really fun.

I just took a surf clinic from CCK in HMB this past Sunday.  Pretty difficult conditions but I learned a lot (4 to 7 foot waves).  It is possible to do the clinic in a sit on top if your kayak is outfitted with thigh straps.  Need to have pretty reliable strokes and self rescue capabilities.  It was a lot of fun.

Kris,

Dave Grigsby (gatorgrigs) from kayak connection in SC and Moss does a lot of kayak surfing in Sit Inside Kayaks.

If you are interested maybe we can arrange a day with him where he can show us the ropes/basics.

He's in charge of the SC PaddleFest contest this year as well...

Sincerely,

Jim

Ok, now on a more serious note:

There's not much to learn, if you're not in a planing kayak.   Use stern rudders to keep you pointed straight down the wave. And when those fail, throw a quick high brace to the wave side of your boat, and steadily lean into it to keep your leading edge up so it doesn't catch and roll you.

Some things you just need to practice, over and over.

So, next time you and your buds are out in the ocean, get out 15 minutes early, then stow your gear on shore, and practice a few times transitioning the surf zone.

I love kayak surfing, I use my whitewater boats. It's fun as hell doin spins, window shades, and cartwheels (usually unintentionally). It's a great way to improve your skills, but get a boat that's made for it and it will be a lot of fun carving up the wave face and launching off the lip and all that good stuff. It's not very difficult to learn and is a fun way to diversify your kayaking interest. If you were up here Id could definately get you out there.
