Namotu, Fiji
« on: October 30, 2014, 05:34:53 PM »
As promised I would give a report on my trip to Fiji. I booked it thru waterways.com and stayed on Namotu, which is the smaller island next to Tavarua. They hold about 26 people versus over a 100.  Great vibe, you mingle with all the folks there. There are 4 main breaks that the boats take you to at your beck and call; Cloudbreak (hard core left barrels on a shallow reef), Namoutu Lefts (much more mellow lefts, 100 Yard waves with countless cutbacks), Wilkes ( throaty right that is on a shallow reef), Swimming Pools (super fun easy left with no consequences).  I have attached a bunch of random photos. This was a trip of a lifetime for me since I got to kite and SUP.  Flight was easy 12 hours from LAX. Cost was cheap at $3400 all inclusive except booze (yes flight). Ralph hooked me up with a huge board bag that I put two sups and a kitesurfboard in. It was $120 each way(under 66lbs and under 9 feet), no problems, no damage.

Ah, thank you. This is a dream trip and at that price, not that crazy to pull off actually.

Ok, so what was the bigger right in these pics? And I assume the bigger left was Namotu Lefts?

Is this a transitional season? If I'm correct summer is bigger and winter is smaller and rainier? I see you had the kite, how many days did you get on each or was it SUP in the am and kite in the afternoon?

Sorry to pepper you but this place is amazing.

And finally, any issues at the breaks or was it basically ride what you want?

The big right was "Wilkes" there is another right called desperados or desperations, which was 3 foot overhead when everything else was 2-3 foot. There were always waves even on the "small" days.

"Is this a transitional season?"  Yes this is a shoulder season,

If I'm correct summer is bigger and winter is smaller and rainier? Yes but we didn't get any rain except one night and it was kinda soothing (especially coming from So cal where it has not rained in a long time)

I see you had the kite, how many days did you get on each or was it SUP in the am and kite in the afternoon?  I kited 4 days in the afternoon/evening. Wind can be problematic in Fiji, but we had plenty of glassy mornings, no complaints.  Even when it was windy at Cloud Break, the inside was glassy. But Cloud Break is a very advanced place, especially to SUP.

Sorry to pepper you but this place is amazing.

No issue, Cloud Break has serious consequences, the barrel spins so fast that you better be on your game or you end up upside down on the reef.  Desperations took 5 guys over the reef with broken leashes.  You have to kick out early or pay the piper.

Oh the fishing was unreal, we (someone) caught Dorado every day, I went once and caught two.

Keep the questions coming.  This was the best surf trip I have ever done, bar none.

Great pics. I did the Kalama Kamp there two years ago and it is a trip I happily  think about all the time. looks like you really scored. By the way, swimming pools is a right.

Ok, you asked for the bruise and here it is....I was dropping in on Cloudbreak next to Kelley Slater and it was 20 foot and I was pitted and he drops in on me and I took him out.....NOT....I fell on the fishing boat after we hit a wave and got planted on my ass....lucky not to break my back...again.  I like the first version better.
