Hi everyone :smt006 been fishing stillwater for a while and been doing really good for lings and rock cod but for next year i was wondering, over to the left as you launch you can see beaches where I would think there is sandy bottoms... is there halibut that can be caught towards that area? Also when salmon season starts back up is there salmon that are caught out in deeper water out of stillwater? Thanks guys! :smt003
Give a man a fish and he'll eat a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit on the water all day with a stick in his hand and no fish.

There have been halibut taken between sws and the point lobos smr...

I also had a salmon swim by me while diving out of there one day.

Lot more salmon and halibut taken over on the Monterey side, but that is also where a lot more people focus their efforts...

I had a friend catch a halibit of Carmel river beach while he was rock fishing a few years back. Two weeks ago I was fishing bodga bay for halibit with no luck swith to rock fish and cought a salmon write on the bottom. Anything posable.

Yep. I know of several reports over by CRSB.

There's also a rock off Carmel beach called Halibut Rock... :smt002

I've put in some hours underwater over on that side looking for halibut with no luck...but that doesn't mean much.  :smt002

 :smt044

It's definitely an area more known for RCG and Lings, but I've seen or heard reports of salmon, halibut, striped bass, black seabass, calico bass, leopard sharks and sheephead over there as well...

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

FWIW...the sand right in front of CRSB is weird...hard and sculpted...if I was a halibut I wouldn't want to lay on it.  :smt005

The sand around the rocks on the sides and in front of Carmel beach looks much softer and more comfy.

Off Carmel Beach it is a good area for lings and for leopard sharks, both of which I have encountered in the area. The females come into shallow water to spawn in the winter and they choose underwater rocky areas in which to deposit their eggs. I have often encountered lings on the bottom while scuba diving in this area, and spent time free diving with schools of leopard sharks.

Don't forget the occasional marlin, or was it a swordfish, I get them confused.

Swordfish. But that was to the North on the Monterey Side.  :smt002

Have had multiple Lancet fish sightings though on the SWS/Carmel Bay side.

Jim where is halibit rock located never heard of it. I live in P G and fished  carmel  12/15 times better for me last year. More people fishing it this year. I usually fish by my self trying to get better hooked up with guys from ncka. Hooked a good halibit this year 50' water just of the end of the pier in front of MBK trolling on my way to the hotel.

Just North of where Ocean Ave runs into the beach, towards Arrowhead point, the one rock that sticks up...it's got a small area of reef/structure around it and then goes to sand.

Yeah, a lot more success stories coming out of the MBK side for sure...

A couple months ago, I've encountered with the school of salmon passing by near the carmel beach while I was diving there.
it was an unbelievable experience and also it was so hard to resist the temptation to pull the trigger.
I was even thinking about paying the fine for it.  but at the end, they did not hang around too long.

Nice dude!!

My encounter was on March 12th...my birthday...swam right under me while I was on surface breathing up...dove down and followed the big girl for a bit.

Yes...at first my finger was on the trigger as well, but after I took it off and pulled back the gun and just swam with her it was amazing.
