Kayak Color

Post by tarmacsl412 »

Greetings all.
I hope this isn't a redundant question but, what are some opinions on the best visible/safe color for a kayak ? I will be fishing both bay and lakes. Thanks for all your input in advance.

A few years ago I had a chance to shoot pictures of several different color kayaks on Estes Flats near Aransas Pass. When I down loaded the pictures it was amazing to me that two colors stood out considerably over all the others on that hazy day. Mango was in third place but LIME green and bright yellow tied and were the two glaringingly visible colors. Since then that is the only two colors I will have for a yak.

I have the lime green and yellow (lemon) cuda for visibility but another thing to keep in mind is paddle blade color. I have the BB pro angler carbon with yellow and lime green blades. I originally liked it because the blades matched my kayak but the blade color proved to have a really nice secondary benefit of greatly increased visibility. My blades are visible from the beach when me and the rest of the kayak are not. My wife can see the paddle motion from shore when Im several hundred yards off shore. I have waved off several high speed power boats that acted as they could not see me, as they got closer at high speeds I waved the paddle up above my head and they seemed to only then see me and re-direct their path. just something to think about, make me feel a bit safer knowing I can wave the paddle blades to dramatically increase my visibility.

I completely agree with you smokedcuda. I had forgotten about that from the pictures I spoke of before. Definitely have hi vis paddle blades. Thanks for the reminder.

I never thought about paddle blade color. Guess we sometimes put more emphasis on the bigger object. So lime green it is all around. Thanks again gentlemen be safe and tight lines.

Some good information posted hear, also note that color choice will not scare fish, so pick the color that is safest and go catch the big one
