Hi all,

I'm thinking of going fishing tomorrow, but I'm not sure how the report looks considering the weather today.

"N wind 5 to 15 kt becoming NW in the afternoon. Sunny. Mixed swell...NW 5 ft at 13 seconds and SW 1 ft at 16 seconds becoming W. Wind waves around 1 ft."

From a different site: "NW WINDS 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT...BECOMING 3 TO
5 FT IN THE AFTERNOON. NW SWELL 6 TO 8 FT AT 13 SECONDS."

I am flexible on going to Santa Cruz Harbor or MBK side. To me, that looks like pretty good conditions but I may be completely off. And which side would have the better water conditions in this case?

Thanks. I would really like to go fishing tomorrow but don't want to waste a trip.

The wind can make it very difficult for you.

today was a knarly forecast

..and when I got there at my launch spot.. I messaged Ryan to let him know it was raining pretty good but water and wind was not as bad as they were calling for..he and a few others said they were gonna skip today..and so was I --at first.....So I went to my buddies and we had coffee, he also saw rain ion the driveway and called off....after an hour I drove back to the launch in light rains...and the sun was out  here and there with blue patches out otw and to the west...the knarly black clouds were moving away from p.g and heading east towards S.J over Mt Freemont and inland...I could see all the way to moss landing and santa cruz under a 1/2 mile ceiling

rain dying...called my buddy who was still sipping coffee at home and said..."do you want to 'try' to fish today or not?"and we fished all day with decent swell but nothing too bad...sun and clouds and then sun again..lings and rockfish all did their part..for a rocking good day...
I saw sea turtle in 150 f.o.w...came right up from below my kayak , it was about 3 feet across at the shell...it got some air and went right back down in a flash...unreal...big round head and beak looked just like the picture here I found on the net-below---a first for me and when I told  my nephews who fish commercial here most days ,and surfed here for decades ,they said they have never seen one
moral of the long story...in Monterey Noaa and the local news ...can be wrong....I saw 10-25 knots winds on the news this morning...trees on the sant cruz mountians would be getting blown down it said...12+ foot swell and strong winds and rains expected ....instead--it was a great day...going again tomorrow...in monterey imo...you have to stand on the shore and make the call...the weather forecast helps...but dont count on it being nice ,or bad, just by the forecast

going 7 a.m tomorrow...big fat lings and my p.b copper today  :smt003

Yeah, I'm not in santa cruz so it's harder to just hop over and hope for the best haha. I'll just try next weekend..

I have a recipe if you snag one of those sea turtles. It's Yaba Daba Delicious!!!!!

I hear their shells make good hard hats too.

p.g and carmel were huge waves..drove to the wharf and it was glassy and sunshine -no wind---unreal morning...did not launch---to0 tired from fishing all day yesterday and wanted the day off....got some breakfast and then drove around checking launches and watching the bay....everything by mbk was glass...even at 11 a.m...perfect day on the bay from the mile buoy to del monte beach....

I opted to play it safe with my girls on Sunday and leave the rods/reels at home and just explore the slough.  :smt001

Pulled up yak on a little sandy dune spot for a break and then let them play around. Vale was all jazzed to SUP and work on her self rescue skills.   :smt004

Then we had this cool otter diving underneath us...working on digging a clam out from a shelf about 15 feet down. Could see him down there digging underwater and blowing bubbles up!

When he got the clam he floated right next to us eating. Super cool to see!

The girls decided his name was Scruffy Mama.  :smt005

Good times!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

those elkhorn slough otters eat well for sure!!
I watched one otter there once, eat a huge clam with a big tapered foot sticking out of the black and goldish shell  ...right  next my kayak--It made Me HUNGRY!!!

great pics Jim

here are a few I took Sunday a.m to record the differences in locations just on the Monterey /p.g side of the bay- and in relation the forecast  reports

the coral st -asilomar area had large sets with wind and foam and close sets loading into the launch coves...

but over at MBK -wharf 2 area there was only the steady little wave that folks were surfing on by the piers footing...and along del monte ...easy launches with glassy -beautiful calm waters all the way to the red buoy

when I left Monterey at 11:30 it was still so nice that I was debating whether to just go light and do a 2 hr cruise to the hotel and back for some fat lings...the couch was calling my name

was talking to a buddy - joking that by MBk only lightning or huge wind would ruin it for a morning ling and back...thought of you   :smt001 when taking these pics  Sunday ,a.m ,tried to get the best shot of the glass as that guy paddled the surf board out lol...I would have gone right then sunday when these photos were taken but was pretty tired from the swell Saturday...oh and arms were sore from lings..  :smt044
