Recommendation for Port Mansfield Guides

Post by shoffer »

I am taking a group of 6-8 down to Port Mansfield in November. Whom do you recommend for guides? I have heard of Capt. Tricia, but who else would you recommend?

We fished with Captain Marsh Steussy a few weeks ago and had a blast. We waded the flats with spoons for reds, good time.

My unquestionable favorite place to stay and fish in Mansfield is Getaway Adventures Lodge. It is under new management now, after it was built and run for years by a husband and wife who ran the place like a family vacation. He ran the facility and the guides, she cooked the fantastic all inclusive meals - breakfast, sack lunches and dinner to die for. Chest freezers to get your fish ready for the trip home, a bunch of rooms, 2-4 beds each, with nice bathrooms. They also had a stable of good guides (the inventor of the Mansfield Mauler used to guide for them). A pool table, swimming pool and you can on occasion catch tarpon off of their docks if you can hook them up. Also had a van service to pick you up from the Harlingen airport (not sure they're still doing that). Bruce & Shirley sold the place, but it took him like three years to sell it because, as he told me "I had to find a suitable person to carry on what we started and what our guests have come to expect."

I highly recommend it. I will go back. There may be better guides, but to be honest, down there, it barely matters - I have fished with the best and I have fished with the just-OK guides down there and unless it was horrible weather, we always caught fish and there were usually quality fish amongst them. One year, I specifically told our guide I wanted to catch a snook. By 10:00 am, I had a snook. And on such short notice, you will rarely find 2 or 3 really great guides unbooked for a party the size of yours. Not even sure you'll be able to get booked at Getaway, but you should definitely give them a call.
