Hi All,

Need a bit more information in order to start making the arrangements.  First, what type of paddling experience do you folks have?  It would be good to keep together folks with similar paddling experience.  Second, what objectives would you have for the course?  What is it that you would like to learn or improve upon?  Finally, I still need availability from some of you.

Yesterday, I took a private lesson from Matt over at CCK in HMB.  It was four hours long and covered whatever I was interested in working on.  I got a lot of great information out of the session.  Worked on a variety of strokes, sweeps, scull, quickly stopping, low brace and forward stroke.  Got some real good suggestions for improving my forward stroke.  Spent about two hours on that.  Then we went out onto open water.  The day was really choppy with some pretty big swell (Mavericks was breaking).  Went over to the cove next to the breakwall and practiced surf landing and launching.  Then spent some time trying to surf the top of a wave.  After that we spent some time in mixed swell taking waves over the side and practicing bracing and dealing with pretty rough conditions with waves coming from multiple directions.  Finally, I learned to use my paddle to help me swim back to my kayak.

All in all it was a great day and I learned a lot.  The cost was $179 for four hours of instruction.  In my opinion that's a lot of instruction one on one.  If we can six folks together they can do a custom class for $99 per person for (I believe) a full day.  Need a full day due to size of class.  I'm willing to set something up if anyone was interested.

Very cool man. Glad to see folks interested in the kayak part of kayak fishing.
The paddle swim is a great skill to learn and practice. Curious as to what you learned on the forward stroke. Shorter length with a more efficient catch angle? Rotating at the hips and utilizing the lays and core rather than arm paddling?

I would classify myself as a Beginner paddler.  I'd like to focus on surf launches and landings.

Beginner as well. Surf launch and landing and paddling technique will be great for me. I guessif I can paddle more efficiently, I can go farther with less fatigue :-)

There were a few adjustment that Matt had me make.  First, was to reach out more on the plant, and be more aggressive with it.  Second, was to move the paddle away from my body more.  Finally, to 'kick' the peddles more to involve my hips and legs more in the stroke.  Obviously, there is always more work you can do, but those were the main things he had me focusing on.

Nice. Legs are crucial for effecient paddling. The more you utilize the legs and your core, the longer and more efficiently you will be able to paddle. Always try to engage the largest muscles in your body as they were designed for endurance. If your arms are tiring fast then the technique is wrong. Awesome, man. Practice, practice , practice.

Hey Wizz, do you ever incorporate a technique used in canoeing where you use your core abdominals to thrust the boat forward? I don't think I know how to explain it any further.

I would classify myself as a beginner paddler. I would like to learn to surf launching.  but more importantly, surf landing.  Also Bracing.  I have taken kayak course from California kayak many years ago.  Thus any lesson would be helpful. My best days are anything except Sunday. But giving enough time I could make any day work.

until your Mirage drive fails

These are necessary skills even for Hobie owners.  You can easily ruin your drive and rudder if you launch or re-enter and time it wrong.
One time at EKG I re-entered the surf with my drive inside at the off position.  A wave sneaked up from behind and pushed me sideways.
One of the drives dragged the beach as I was sliding in. The fin mast got bent.  It was cheap part to replace but I learned my lesson.
Now I always pull the drive out and have the rudder up when launching and coming back in.

We don't always have the luxury of a protected cove or flat weather.

Hi All,

In order to calibrate experience please answer the following questions:

- How many years have you been kayak fishing?

- How many times have you been out kayak fishing in the ocean during that period?

- How many times have you been out on a kayak during that period?

- Can you self-rescue with confidence?

- What strokes are you familiar with and confidence level with each (1-10)

-- forward stroke

-- sweep strokes

-- draw strokes

-- reverse forward stroke

-- others:

I'll use myself as an example:

- How many years have you been kayak fishing? 4

- How many times have you been out kayak fishing in the ocean during that period? 100+

- How many times have you been out on a kayak during that period? 100+

- Can you self-rescue with confidence? Yes

- What strokes are you familiar with and confidence level with each (1-10)

-- forward stroke: yes, 6

-- sweep strokes: yes, 5

-- draw strokes: yes, 4

-- reverse forward stroke: yes, 4

-- others: low brace: yes, 4, high brace: yes, 2

Please be honest in your assessment.  I just want to make sure we have folks grouped together with similar levels of experience.  Thanks!
