Alright. I get it. Your son is a master kayaker who's immune to unforeseen circumstances.

Next time you post something about him, maybe do it in the members only section. That way other folks who might THINK they're master kayakers won't see him out there in a T-shirt and get the wrong idea. Kinda like these two unfortunate fellows from Washington. There's a pretty good chance these guys spent some time browsing the public sections of NWKA before that fateful day... Does your son post pictures on that site, too?

He doesn't post or publish or care to make his ventures known nor does he believe he is immune to unforeseen circumstances or chance events nor do I. Anything can happen at anytime. That's life. One makes his or hers seasoned judgements and lives by them. Pretty sure any kayak neophyte perusing this forum will get adequate safety instruction on what to do and not do and then make a choice.

I don't think that we are responsible as individuals or an online community for what other people might or might not do after seeing our posts.

I do things like diving alone that are NOT "safe". Am I responsible if someone watches a video of mine and goes out for a solo dive and gets in trouble? Hell no. And neither is NCKA where I posted the video nor any of you guys who also happen to be NCKA members.

Does it matter IMO if pics/vids are posted in public or members only?  Hell no. Plenty of people with more than 10 posts that can see the members only section who are probably really "unsafe" and "inexperienced" and shouldn't do stuff like dive alone, or paddle remote sections of coast alone etc.

Charles and his son went out kayaking and fishing. His son chose not to wear his PFD. Whether or not any of us agree with it, it doesn't matter because we are not Charles or his son.

If someone sees a pic of someone in rough weather without a PFD or whatever and goes out and does the same thing and gets in trouble that is on THEM, not on anyone else.

I am responsible for me and my family...that's enough! I am in no way responsible if someone tries to do what I do and gets hurt...and neither are Charles or his son.

I post pics and vids on here cuz sharing adventures is fun! Or at least meant to be!  :smt002

TGIF!

Sincerely,

Jim

Not trying to argue with you. I agree that you aren't responsible for what others do after seeing your posts. But at the same time, I think its 100% worth considering. Clearly there are people out there who are ready and willing to do stupid things. Often all it takes to push them to action is seeing another person do what they're thinking of doing. Cinnamon challenge hospital visits... Ice bucket challenge K/O's... People just love doing stupid things after watching someone else do it.

...stepping off the soap box now.

A friend from Boston was invited to dinner and I thought some fresh rockfish would be an ideal meal. My son from Alaska just arrived at my place Wednesday morning so we loaded the yaks, my Adventure and a 18 foot by 22 inch glass Eddyline for him. He only uses SIKs in Alaska to fish from. Conditions were less than ideal. Big swell with a hard running current going north. Once outside the cove conditions became fishable, barely that is. Foe awhile I was thinking that dinner was going to be chicken but we ended up with five blacks and a decent ling. Managed to catch the right wave and land upright which was a good ending for the kind of day it was. The SIK with an expert paddler really rode the swells, slop, and surf nicely, better than my SOT for sure.

Great report!
Matt

I went out of SWN last week and it was pretty sloppy. South swell running into a north swell made for some interesting out of the blue breakers. Years ago I took a motor sail boat from Seattle to Seward Alaska and it took 18 days. I couldn't imagine kayaking that!!! Wow! As for lifejackets. For me it's like my seat belt for the ocean. I never go out with out it, nor do I drive without a belt, but that's me. Always wore a face shield when I played hockey, and my SCBA when fighting fires too... :smt004 Too each his own tho… We are adults here right?  :smt002 Glad you got some recreation time with your son Charles. He sounds like an ANIMAL!!!
