What is the deal with his leash.  It looks like it is attached at his waist, but is an ankle leash.  Does he have some light self releasing thing.  It would keep the leash out of the feet and water, but do what leashes are supposed to do.

He's got a long leash on.  And I think he's got it doubled and stuffed in the
back of his trunks.  Won't foul up the camera guy and would just pull out if
needed.

Does that mean we are going to see a leash merchandised as the Laird Buttcrackio?

They might have some libel issues due to the danger of it snagging
something  ;)  if stuffed to deep, ouch!

I know that the photographer is behind him for the shot, but I bet somebody (Surfer mag forum) uses this pic to prove that stand up guys (Laird and every other stand up guy) regularly drop in on people.

As for the leash, I saw a pic of Laird doing this years ago. Since then, I now stuff a loop of my leash in my trunks to keep it from dragging in the water and out of our very kelpy line up. Works great.

That barrel looks as big from the inside as it does from the boats :-O

Thanks! for the great pic.  Getting in a barrel like that and surviving would be a dream come true for me.

I'm not so sure that is the "camera guy" who decided to drop in behind him and film it, but I could be wrong.  I recall a seeing him dropping in on someone in one of the videos from a recent big swell.  Where does it say that is the camera man?

With that wide angle perspective and If that's not the camera man behind Laird, then the guy is in the process of getting plowed by the phantom third guy in the tube.

Really though, that is a normal hand held GoPro perspective, a willing percipient or not. My bet is that it was a set up shot for Laird Enterprises LTD.

This was all over Surfline and Instagram last week.

Anthony Walsh is way more than a photographer, he's the surfer way further in the barrel and behind Laird shooting with a GoPro.

http://www.surfermag.com/week-in-review/week-review-31/

Commenter who won the internet said, "Get off the shoulder, Laird." Hilarious.

Sharing a wave like that takes talent and trust.

Laird used to wear a belt leash but this seems to be his new way to go.

Great story.  Anthony Walsh is a tube specialist and a gopro enthusiast.

In quote out of a surf mag he says laird was already on the wave from the outside and he took off behind him, "there was plenty of room for two."
