to chirp or not to chirp?

Post by jgatorman »

I am in the market for either an elite 7 hdi or an elite 7 chirp. Lowrance is the manufacture oF choice simply because unit is going into a 2015 Hobie PA14 kayak and the transducer is designed for this kayak. I will be fishing primarily from Destin to Pensacola in 40 to 70 feet of water lots of trolling out to structure to bottom fish. secondary purpose would be like fishing in the Birmingham Alabama area up to 300 feet. Question is to chirp or not to chirp? I am open to other options other than Lowrance if the mounting of the transducer is feasible.

I have the elite 5 HDI. Don't know what the chirp is. Have not looked that up.
But yes the transducer will fit right on the pa. But it will take you a bit to figure out the mount hardware because the instructions are not clear.
But even my unit will work for the depths your looking for. So I'm sure the 7 will handle it on the HDI. I thought mine was a little big for my PA. But the 7 will be a monster lol. You will like it man.
Get you a good SD card for it. Your going to want to play with the unit at first and not fish very much hahaha. It happened to me. I was busy looking lol.

to chirp or not to chirp?

Chirp is suppose to be better as it can use two frequencies at once.

Might want to double check the fit as I think chirp and hdi are different transducers sizes

I just started looking at both also buy 5" version so no experience just research info

Not sure if you read this info yet

The elite HDI has dual already. 2D and down scan.
I noticed the chirp doesn't go to 800kHz and My model HDI will go to 800kHz Guess with the chirp it doesn't need to go that high. But you would think if it did it would be even clearer?

I'm seeing the difference looks to be in the down scan clarity because of the chirp technology added. So it's basically using 3 technologies. Just the chirp is doubled up with down scan. Pretty cool, hind sight. Makes you think you should of waited longer to get this one.
But I'm happy with the one I have. You can get very clear down scan if you finally figure out how to tune it correctly.

These are from the spec page on the elite chirp 7. I believe for my depths I would prefer the 83/200khz transducer vs50 / 200 kHz transducer could anyone advise

455/800 kHz (DownScan Imaging™), Low, Med, High (CHIRP), 50 kHz/83kHz/200kHz (Narrow Band)

I have the 455/800 for down scan
2d is 50,83,200
I would read up a little on how they work and what the differences mean brother so you can make a choice on what your main usages will be.

200 has highest sensitivoty and best target discrimination in shallow water.
83 is a wider cone angle for more coverage and 50 is the best depth penitration.

455 has greater depth coverage and 800 has best resolution

hope this helps you out

also downscan doesnt have a sesitivity setting. So you will adjust the contrast level that works best for the conditions of the water
When you finally get one. Read that book. It will help understand how it works and from there you can tweak your system to work great. From the beginning you will be using presets for the most part. Then when you are getting farmiliar with the unit. You can play with it and get more out of it.
