Kayaker dies in Upstate NY pond; NYC medical student not wearing life vest

HADLEY, N.Y. -- A Columbia University medical student has died in a kayaking accident in Upstate New York.

Jonathan Tang, 24.

Jonathan Tang, 24, was in a kayak on Stewart's Pond in Hadley on Saturday when he apparently fell into the water, the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office says.

Witnesses saw him struggling before disappearing underwater.

Tang was spending the weekend in the area with other medical students, sheriff's deputies told the Albany Times Union.

Deputies said other students tried to rescue Tang but he disappeared before anyone could reach him.

Crews from several police departments searched for Tang but were unsuccessful Saturday.

Tang's body was recovered Sunday.

Deputies said he was not wearing a life vest.

Tang grew up in Brooklyn and was a fencer at New York University before attending medical school.
