HADLEY –The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office identified the missing kayaker on Stewart’s Pond Sunday as Jonathan Tang, a 24-year-old Brooklyn resident and Columbia University medical student.

The sheriff’s office Dive Team and Corinth Fire Department Dive Team recovered his body Sunday.

Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies said Tang was renting a home near the water with other medical students this past weekend, and took a kayak out near Stewart’s Bridge Road Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses saw Tang out of his boat and struggling and yelling before disappearing underwater Saturday on Stewart’s Pond. Other students tried to get him, but he disappeared before anyone could reach him, deputies said.

The initial investigation revealed that the victim was not wearing a life vest when he entered the water, deputies said.

Emergency crews from Hadley, Corinth and South Glens Falls, as well as a New York State Police helicopter, assisted in attempting to locate the man, but were unsuccessful Saturday. The search resumed Sunday morning.

Tang grew up in Brooklyn, and was a fencer at New York University before attending medical school.

The approximately three-mile long lake is downstream of the Great Sacandaga Lake and situated between two  dams. It has a fishing and boating access site as well as campsites.
