I have been ab diving a couple times and managed to get them despite limited bottom time. I can't really dive deep. I have my own gear, but have been sticking to rod and reel fishing/scuba diving for years. Is the ab diving class at Sonoma Coast Divers  the way to go for me? I would like to get out ab diving again.

Thanks guys

Not to sure about abalone class but a buddy of mine took the spearfishing class threw sonoma coast divers and said it was a huge waist of money! Basically was handed a gun and told to go to work.

If you are already getting abalone Im not sure how much you would get out of a "abalone" class. A freediving class is the way to go. Focusing on safety, proper breathing and techniques and over all a better/safer diver.
Just my 2cents

Hope this helps

I'm not local down there, and haven't been ab diving in a couple years. What I am thinking is that I would at least get some spots where I could go and not have to dive 20-30 feet. Last time I went was off of private property, and we didn't pull trophies, but nice abs from 12-18 feet of water. I don't get out freediving enough, so my bottom time is limited.

I know the guys that teach this class. I would say it is more for first timers.. my bottom time is limited as well, I have been AB diving and spearfishing for the past couple of years and I never go past 20FOW. I don't have any trophy ABs bit I have gotten a couple of 9's. i

I agree with what others already said.  Basic ab class if for someone who has never dove for abs.  Freedive class is not for new guys but should be considered after you are comfortable freediving and want to expand on what you already learned.  They do offer valuable info on safety, shallow water black outs and partner rescue.  The FII class also pushes your limits and most people end up diving deeper than they have ever done.  Usually in open water and you better be comfortable doing that.  With that said I have not taken either class but have been told all this from those who have.

I have seen abs in almost all locations I have dove and in all depth ranges.  So once you start diving again you will be able to increase your depths and time with practice.

Post on the forum when you want to dive and see if someone will go with you.  Have fun.

I am heading down to the simply fishing tourney 9/26-29. Fish Sat, dive Sun for Abs and shoot some fish. You are welcome to join me. I am not a 50'  trophy hunter, just another old guy having fun. Have not dove since mid June :smt010, so I plan on making up for it Oct and Nov :smt044.  Give me a yell and meet for a beer in Reno.
