Is it bad for a carbon fiber paddle to stay in a hot car?
« on: September 12, 2014, 01:55:34 PM »
Since I paddle almost every day, I tend to leave my paddle in my Jeep and take only my board in and out.  It has been really hot in SoCal the past few days and it is occurring to me that staying in my Jeep, which sits in the hot sun while I'm at work, may not be good for my new carbon paddle, not sure.  Anyone have input?

Uh, this was post 666 for me.  Does that mean my paddle will explode and poke my eye out?

It's probably not the best place to store your paddle, but as long as it is out of direct sunlight, it shouldn't hurt it.  Your not going to heat it up enough to affect the epoxy (KeNalu's might result in a little glue melt at the joints, but that should harden again once the temp goes down).

I keep 4 paddles in my car, 2 bags that hold 2 paddles, strapped to the inside of the roof.  They're out of direct sunlight and I imagine the bags help somewhat. 3 of them are KeNalu's and 1 Starboard... no apparent damage but I guess it's possible it could shorten their lifespan.

I wouldn't leave my blade propped up on the dashboard but I do leave my paddles in the car all the time, granted it is grey and 50 degrees in Michigan right now.

I don't know the answer, but you've made me wonder--if a standup paddler walks by a car parked in the sun with the windows rolled up and sees a carbon paddle trapped inside, is he or she legally justified to break the window?

The real issue you may have isn't the damage to your paddle from the sun, but the possibility of coming back to your car only to see the window shattered, the paddle seized by the authorities, and an angry mob of standup paddlers and a news crew waiting to confront you and post it all online.

My paddle gets whacked a fair amount if I leave it in the car. Carbon does not like that and does not show the damage. Paddle snapped in half while paddling for a wave. Had not hit it at all that day. Cumulative damage from 18 months of use, I suspect much of the damage occured off the water.

I'd say yes and no..

Yes if you use hot glue or even 5 minute epoxy because I've heard of people that have gone to grab their paddle after being in a hot car and pulled on the shaft and left the blade behind in the car..  :)

No re the 666..  :)

Probably not really. Even low temp hot glue melts at 260F. Hi temp is 350 and more. The original stuff we used on Ke Nalu paddles softened at 380F. I don't know what they use now, but it's probably similar. Your dashboard would melt before the glue would. I don't really know why boiling water works for releasing five minute epoxy.

PB,  Because water has a higher heat capacity than air.

Can I play?

This is pure wild ass guess on my part. Don't get made if I'm wrong, just give the correct answer.

I bet the quoted high/low temps for hot glue refer to the temp of the heating element in the gun.  That temp is not the actual melt point.  It is the working temp where the product has the right viscosity.

Melt point must be under 100C, but somewhere above it's operational temp range.

Here's the fun part.  I doubt this stuff is really solid at room temp. It is probably a super cooled liquid.  If you left a stick of this stuff on your desk for 50 years it would turn into a puddle.  It would be a hard puddle, but a puddle just the same.

Great... trying to visualize what effect the presence of a 7 foot paddle will have in my office environment. Awkward elevator rides. Comments made about it in my tiny cubicle.

I've kept my surf stick (which the handle was gorilla glue'd, not sure what paddle end was done with) in the car recently on a dozen or so hot (90F+) days for about 8-9 hour spans. It's still fine. However I keep the blade down in the passenger side footwell of my truck, and the handle is up high underneath the roof. I hot glued my hippo race paddle however, and may be walking it upstairs at work now. Its gonna be kinda hard to sneak out at lunch with a paddle for a paddle.

Just put the paddle in a padded paddle bag, then the sun / heat shouldn't effect it

I think so.  I've had the seams split on the of the female end of blade, where the shaft goes into.  I'm blaming it on the heat from keeping it on the car.  I Solarezed, and now store it with my board in the garage after sessions.  It's been fine since. It's an old QB paddle.

Sure.

There are actually hundreds of hot glue formulations, but generally hardware store low temp means 250F for the glue and common high temp is 350F. The guns run at 275-300F (150C) for low and 360-400F (180C) for high. I don't generally use the guns because they bring the glue barely above the melting point.

The really low temp EVA stuff like you find at fabric stores melts around 200F or even less, but it has paraffin wax in it and it's not suitable for paddles.

All hot glues remains tacky at temperatures much lower than when it first melted ("open" time), but once it has hardened it must be heated back to the melt temperature to be fully liquid again..

I imagine like most materials that both hot glue and epoxy get weaker as they are heated. Even when they aren't really melted they might get weak enough to debond.
