Former Bethany mayor hospitalized after kayaking

Former Bethany Beach councilman and mayor Bob Parsons was hospitalized Thursday after having a heart attack while kayaking at Assateague Island National Seashore.

It happened around 1:30 p.m.

National Park Service spokeswoman Liz Davis said Parsons, 71, was in a kayak near the entrance to the park's Over Sand Vehicle area. He washed up on the beach in cardiac arrest. Lifeguards performed CPR, and he was soon rushed to Atlantic General Hospital.

Parsons remains hospitalized in good condition, according to Davis.
