A kayaker who tipped his vessel in Lake Michigan Sunday was rescued by bystanders.

The accident happened just before 4 p.m. off the shore of Kohler Andrae State Park, said Town of Wilson Fire Chief Brian Schmitt.

The kayaker, who has not been identified, tipped over in the water and when bystanders noticed he couldn't right himself, they pulled him to safety, Schmitt said.

By the time they got the man ashore, he was very cold and semiconscious, Schmitt said.

Oostburg Fire Department transported the man on an all-terrain vehicle from where he was on the beach to the area where the ambulance was waiting, and then the man was taken to St. Nicholas Hospital.

Wilson Fire Department and First Responders Oostburg Ambulance and Fire Department responded.
