TallDude--I used to wear O'Neill Superfreak 2mm also.  They are sand catchers.
The last time I went to the Victory KoreDry store (?), Brian said that he wears their Vooties for surfing.  Also, on very hot sand days, some of the volleyball players at Huntington wear them to keep their feet from burning up.
Because they fit more like a sock they are they don't seem to catch so much sand.  Because they are more sock like, after wearing it is easy to turn them inside out.  That sure helps keep the stink out.

Yo, SoCal,
You guys do need to get together!  If you choose to move toward action, I will give you a hat to wear.  You earned it along time ago.  My flag, your flag, a new flag, just tell me what I can do.
Surfing was, is and always will be dangerous.  My first board was a Hansen in 1964.  It was used.  It had teeth marks on the nose where the previous owner lost all four front uppers.  I guess it was my first safety wake up and reminder.
When I graduated to a short (for the time) Plastic Fantastic I was amazed by many things.
But, in 1969 there was no such competition and stratification by board.  It was just "Get out! This is our break"  If you didn't have a yin yang on your board, you didn't surf the south side of the HB Pier.  My buds surfed the north side.  We walked from the house.
Point being that this is the same issue with another authority misplacing thier basis for decision making.
Safety is based in eduction, courtesy, and maturity.
The volume of the board is a contribution, not a cause.  Identifying paddles as the problem is just wrong.
The increasing popularity of SUP surf will make the changes eventually.  But, for now, you gotta fight authority and community.

Enough old guy blather.  You want to run under the HPWA banner, or seek any specific letter writting, or anything else, SoCal is a charter member, even if he won't admit it.  I have not faced off with the culture or the authority.  But, I will be there for you.  Maybe I'll go out with you and I can get my butt kicked by waves and surfers.  That would at least be entertaining for you.

Maybe, just maybe, some older lifeguard who has fallen for SUP might mark out some good breaks and kick out the proners.
Salt Creek will be a lesson for the regulars when the BoP comes next month.  I heard the complaints and the news on the same day.  Get out and get some waves between races!  That is your two days reserved for SUP.  Just don't cut off the elite racers.
