Whats a simple brine for anchovy/herrings?   Salt + Mrs Stewarts bluing liquid?

Do you just mix bunch of salt with the bluing liquid and throw in the chovies?  Any particular type of salt to use or just any table salt will work?

Thanks in advance.

I use kosher salt, liquid bluing and bottled water.  2 cups of salt to 3 cups of water.  You can also use a handful of Borax.  Some add powdered milk too.

+1

Keep them in the freezer too. The salt will cause the water not to freeze into ice. I use Kosher salt.

I tried brine and found that just having chovies that have never been thawed and refrozen was the most important thing - chovies will be toast even with a brine if they're thawed and refrozen, IME.

As for herring, they're so damn tough, I can't even tell if a brine did anything for them.

I'm not a brine hater!  I'd like to develop more of a process which would include brining, but I'm finding that simple is best (no brine, doing fine...).  Good luck.   :smt001

I've doing this for years.  Bring a zip lock with about half to 3 quarter cup of Kosher salt.  Just before you go fishing put some water (fresh or salt) in the bag to dissolve the salt then add your bait (bagged chovies or tray bait) in the bag.
A Canadian fishing guide showed me this to help toughen your bait.  Your bait is good for the day not for re-freezing.

Have also heard of people adding some glitter to the brine solution.

I put my bait in the brine while it is still partially frozen and keep it very cold the whole time.  While on the water I will add ice to the brine.  What I like about brining my bait is that I can just put it back in the fridge and re-use it.  The herring I used last week at HMB was from the same batch of bait I took to Shelter Cove 3 weeks prior.  I hate throwing out unused bait!

I do the same, but why not good for re-freezing?  The brine/bait doesn't freeze after throwing them back in the freezer.  I do keep the bait cold while out on water though.

I just add some fresh bagoong (pinoy brine shrimp) with the anchovies before food wrapping it.  Works great on anchovies and herring.   :smt001

You got it!  But it may raise your salt level like hell though.   :smt005  Not good if you have high blood.   :smt001
