Myself and Gary(BullShark) made it up to ORC. The WX the day of was great, a bit choppy in the AM and then it got real nice. The drift was funny, it started North to South at about 1.3mph and then it switch to South to North at about 1mph, I never really felt the drift switch. Also the fog never really lifted but was lighter towards the end of day with a light breeze throughout the day. I seen a bunch of grey whales pass through and some kind of bulbous nosed dolphins.

I fished a new bait I'm working on all day and never switched, targeting cabs specifically, I was all in  :smt003. I caught 11 or so cabbies (two were identical 12lbers at 26" and 27") and maybe 4 were over 10lbs. I caught 3 lings biggest 28", one which was hooked in the side and I thought I had a zilla fish as I reeled up... hahaha NOPE. I also caught 3 nice blacks around 19" for tacos. My highlight was a really big fish that I lost and bent my hook!  :smt010 But no cabzilla in the boat for me, although I did see a 16lb'r at the weigh in... Holy Sheet that was a toad!!! I did give it my best and I'm happy with my new personal best Cabby which has become kind of a ghost fish for me for the last few years, but I think I finally found a specific cabby bait I feel confident in.

Thge event had 116 or so registered and as always the event was run professionally. They had one of the best collection of prizes I've seen for any one tourney. They had some nice prizes for the top ten and all competitors received something which made everyone extremely happy and it was a good vibe throughout. They really did a great job.

Congrats to all the winners and it was nice to see a few other NCKA brothers/sisters at the event. We did our best to represent. Here are the official results....

What a good time!! We really wanted to bring this home but it was wasn't in the cards. I'm really happy that they used ORC as a Hobie qualifier but the format of single biggest is tough, maybe multi species next year.

The guy who won, Kenneth Dickens of Portland, it was his first time fishing the salt!!!  :BangHead: Next year I'm bringing my lucky rabbits foot necklace.  hahaha.... nice!!!  :smt044

Nice report mike, any word on if the winner is going to take the trip or pass it down? I like the new bait. Big Sluggo's were always a great lure for calicoes in the jungle.

It was good to have some of you NCKA guys up for the ORC. The ORC has always been single heaviest fish and probably always will be. It has been won 3 out of 7  times by guys on their first salt trip...Single heaviest sucks for because i'm not so lucky. Didn't even bother weighing my fish two years running and i was the very last number drawn in last years raffle and 3rd from the last in this years... :smt013

If you want to do a tourny that requires some more skill then luck come up and fish the Sunset Bay Angler Of The Day Kayak Fishing Challenge. You could catch a 40 pound Ling and if you didn't add some more species you wouldn't even come close to winning... Of course a little luck comes in handy in any tourny
See ya on the water..

For all of you NCKA members that couldn't make it to this years Oregon Rockfish Classic, here's some video of the tourney that's been airing on Comcast Sportsnet in Oregon and Washington. This years ORC was also filmed by Angler West TV show and will be airing a full episode from the tournament on World Fishing Network and Comcast nationally starting next week. I will share the Angler West TV episode as soon as I get a link.. Click HD
Cheers!
