Supers were the first surfers
« on: August 01, 2014, 05:45:10 PM »
This is an article my wife wrote recently

http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2014/08/01/riding-native-wave-surfings-hidden-roots-peru-156158

Watch the video it's worth it. Peru was really the beginning of surfing but it wasn't as romantic as the Hawaiian warm water Diamond head scene so it got less attention

Thanks tw... always nice to learn more surf history. Felipe Pomar was World Surfing Champion in 1965.... huge hero in Peru and quite a gentleman... it was great to see him in this video. Interesting to see how similar the reed boats are to the ones used ancient Egyptians.

Good companion video to watch

Pretty cool.

Peru is so hot for surfing these days. I was talking to Fiona Wylde's dad Macrae yesterday after my upwind/downwind and he told me Fiona is in Peru, surfing. I looked at her blog and this popped up--it's a small world:

If anyone can paddle one of these things it's Fiona. She's the female version of Jeremy Riggs. Astonishing balance.

Thanks for sharing.....Felipe Pomar was an incredible surfer and very centered human ..... I used to surf Log Cabins a lot with him in the winter of 1975....he had a house on the sand there and would always do Tai Chi for awhile before he paddled out...then be in a class of his own in the water.....one of the most under rated surfers of that era....that interview brings back a lot of good memories of him...

I just got back from three weeks in Peru. We did not go to the northern coastal area, where most of the surfing is, but did spend 5 days in  Lima, There was very small will swell and I saw four standupsout with about 40 surfers.

This was an incredible trip I want to go back and if I do, I'll try to get some surfing in.
