Kayaker lost in fog rescued from Lake Michigan

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI -- A kayaker was rescued Wednesday after he became lost in thick fog on Lake Michigan.

A 42-year-old man from the east side of the state set out in a kayak from the Holland pier and traveled south toward Saugatuck. He was about two miles from the pier when the fog became thick, Ottawa County sheriff's Sgt. Cal Keuning said in a news release.

The man used his cell phone to call 911 about 1:30 p.m. July 30. A marine deputy responded and used a siren in the fog, and the kayaker blew a whistle to help the deputy locate him.

The man was brought back to Lake Macatawa.

He was wearing a life jacket.

Keuning said the rescue serves as a reminder for people to know the weather conditions prior to going out on the water. He also reminded boaters to alert others of where they're traveling and when they expect to return.
