An unidentified male kayaker died on the Arkansas River shortly after noon on Monday about seven miles north of Buena Vista, according to the Chafee County Sheriff’s Office.
The man’s kayak had become high-centered on a rock in the Miracle Mile section of the river, witnesses said. They saw him standing on the shore but then, a short while later, saw him floating downriver.
He was pulled from the river about 200 yards downstream but after attempts to revive him failed, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.
