Re-coloring a paddle..
« on: July 25, 2014, 05:49:48 AM »
My KIALOA Methane came with a print that seemed more suitable for SUP in India.   It was easily covered with black vinyl film used for lettering but I saw this new (to me) spray.

This stuff is interesting.  It's a spray film rather than a paint.  You see those kids with Neon wheels on their Hondas - this is what they use.  It's about $7 a can and if you're unhappy with the results now or later, just peel it off.  Before I outlined the base green in Neon I took the paddle out for about a 3hr session.  It only had dings on the edges from paddle strikes. (CH4 is the chemical formula for Methane.. maybe the brown print was an in-house joke)

I did a mild re-decorate of my Allwave also.

Very cool.
Look much better in BLAZE than floral print.
Post pics of the Allwave.  Keep us updated on the wear/tear of the Plastidip.  I've used the stuff on my car (exterior trim), and love it, but wondering how it holds up with use (paddle whacks, bumps, etc)

I Plasti-Dipped my MB Sprinter rims & grill black back in October.  Not a single paint chip after an entire winter of mountain driving and pressure washing.  Good stuff.

Is it grippy? By that I mean can you spray it on the paddle shaft to help prevent your hand from slipping?

I've had plastic dip on my rims for over 3 years now, and love it.  The best part about it is that if it chips, you just spray a little more on and somehow is blends perfectly.  When it starts to dull, hit is with a new coat or rub some Vinylux on it and lit looks brand new.

Thanks Wetstuff, I may give it a try. Personally I wouldn’t spray the entire shaft, just the part where my bottom hand goes.

Chilly,  I am spraying the leading edge of the paddle shaft as we speak..   Here's my mild take on the AW.  Before has the jazzy stripes.. I pulled back on color.  I didn't want to look like a ...mmmm.  I also did not know you could actually mask Plasti Dip, so I left a bit of the original just aft of the logo ..then ran out of paint before I did any more rail beyond the front section of pad.  ..'just a test of the paint rather than an art school project.  I have an idea for the bottom...

How about using plasti dip on the rails,
as a rail saver and/or to cover rail dings that are already there?

I'm not sure about the rails Subber.  That might be worth a look, but I suspect, give the gummy nature of the spray, it would not hold up too well because it does not have a teflon effect to deflect or absorb the strike.
