Not trying to scare anyone fishing Mendo area, but just heard of a Great White breaching the water and taking a fisherman's Salmon today.  Not sure of the details but will update if I get more as my wife's friend's husband witnessed it. Just a reminder of what's out there.

The Salmon bite has died a little in Ft Bragg also, but we went out today and got a 28 lb Salmon and a second that was about the same size broke the hook as it got next to the boat.  We tried south towards Albion but had no bites in the am so we caught a bunch of rocks and Cabazon.  Went north after lunch and there were still Salmon feeding north of buoys in Noyo.

The water was like a lake and coast guard decided to leave the harbor at full blast making the biggest wake I have seen locally. It turned a calm lake into a washing machine for a few moments and would have flipped most kayakers within range.

Stay safe out there.

Thanks for the info Duane. The wake the boats make out there after the jaws are damn scary and can flip a kayak. I hit a wake from there last weekend on my side when I wasn't paying attention and almost flipped.

"Shard" -  :smt005

Seriously, I'm right with you, Keith.  Always preparing myself to get that video going as I simultaneously project "I'm gonna kill you!" toward the shark with everything from my eyes to the shard itself!

BE.  F*#&ING.  READY!!!

Hey, if the landlord is allowed to get out of the water to take a salmon, I should be allowed to get IN the water for one! :)

Funny this topic came up, I saw a GWS breach about 30 feet in front of me at the SC light house during the WSB and salmon run back in 2012. I was fishing near a ledge that goes from 40-80 feet. Was it cool? You bet it was!

Any word on size? If it took a salmon off someone's line, I would be inclined to suspect salmon shark rather than great white. The two look very similar at a glance, except the salmon shark doesn't get nearly as big and it eats, well, salmon.

edit: and apparently they're known to breach too. here's one breaching with a salmon in it's mouth:

I believe it was a commercial fisherman that saw it.  They don't usually video everything like kayak folks.  I am sure the shark (what ever type) was drawn in because of the thrashing fish.

My wife forbid me to dive this week because I was just in the water the other day. Tried to explain the sharks are always out there.
