Welcome. I'm also brand new to kayak fishing and joined this site couple of days ago. I know there are overwhelming info here and I'll probably spend next couple of months staring at my phone. Reliving the days when I joined a motorcycle forum. It's not a salmon but I had a successful kayak bass fishing trip the other day and oh boy it was a blast and hoping to catch me some salmon on American river some time soon. Have fun kayak fishing.

Welcome! I am new from Santa Rosa as well and also recently purchased a new Hobie Outback. I just about have it all rigged except the Fish Finder/GPS combo that I will be installing this weekend. When it is finished I can show you what I did if you would like.

There are a lot of different ways and locations to install a Fish Finder that I have recently learned.
What model of Hobie did you buy? If it is new it may be Lowrance ready and which makes it much easier to install the wiring and transducer.

I have no experience with the Radio/GPS combo but I am sure it could be an option. Someone else here should be able to give you some input.

Welcome people.I believe gps on your vhf is just for safety and notifying rescuers of your location. It wont really help you navigate or find your crabpots or favorite fishing holes. I use a handheld garmin but i think having a fish finder with gps built in is a better option as they have a bigger screen that is easier to read. Don't forget to keep a compass on board in case heavy fog comes in and your electronics fail. If you you with a handheld electronic gps, keep extra aa batteries on board. If you really want a good schooling in everything kayakfishing,go to one of our tournaments like albion this weekend and bring lots of good beer and food.

HiYa' LynneM, I'm also new to Kayak Fishing but traded Santa Rosa for Trinidad. I had a lot of questions and found what I needed here as well as the folks at Adventures Edge. It's a local shop for me but they were extremely cool and patient with me during my search for my next birthday present to me :)
Anyway, the whole Santa Rosa thing got me going so welcome and happy hunting ;)

Cheers!!
