I am heading to Mendocino tomorrow with family for a couple of days for a little break, and will bring a fishing rod with me just in case. I have never been to Mendocino or the general area before, anybody has some pointers for a good place to trying fishing for a couple of hours? Either saltwater or freshwater will be great for me, but it has to be shore fishing since I will not dare to bring my kayak along. Thanks in advance.

In Mendo you can access big river and still get some crabs. Most areas right there are rocky and I usually lose more gear trying from shore, but you can give a shot anywhere with beach access which is everywhere.

Noyo harbor in ft Bragg has a couple boats that go for half day salmon trips. Not sure if it picked up yet but always an option.

Subsurface also rents kayaks and dive gear if interested in abalone.

The weather out here has been better.  Rain and possible thunderstorms. I was going to go diving today but will pass.

Mackerricher state park also has a fresh water lake (large pond) that would be a good spot to kill a few hours.  Its just n of ft Bragg and has trout, bass and some smaller fish.

Enjoy your weekend away.

Thanks a  lot, DG! Yea, the weather sucks, but it will still beat staying at work anytime  :smt044. We are bringing rain gears as well.

If you don't mind fishing off of cliffs the Mendo Headlands have been producing well for my shore fishing buddies and its right by town so the family can shop while you fish

Yea, i am staying in Mendocino Hotel in the village, and tried this morning on the cliff at lower right corner of the map for rock fish. I think i might got a couple of bites, but both times the rig get snagged. Gave up after a bunch of other tourists gathered around and watched me as tourist attraction :smt044 I am happy that I tried cliff fishing for the first time, and concluded that cliff fishing is not my thing, I just do not feel relaxed at a cliff edge.

I also drove to fort bragg this morning, but cannot get my family to go with me to the lake to try fishing...

Mendocino is a beautiful little town with a lot of old world charm, I am so happy to be here.

Thanks everyone for suggestions.

There are a lot of fish off the cliff at the end of the road on Heeser Dr.
I've been ab diving there before very beautiful reef with mucho pescados.

The only thing is that it is one hell of a sketchy climb down the face of that cliff. One false step and its curtains or a helicopter ride out if your lucky to survive  :smt009

+1 on what Antonio posted. Spiked boots make a huge difference in scaling like that.
