I have always been a monofilament guy.  I like the low visibility, the high castibility, good knot strength, low cost, and in many circumstance the stretch. Since moving to the coast and fishing deeper environments, I have come desire the low stretch and thin diameter of braid. So recently I took the plunge and spooled my Tekota 500 with 30 Pound Calcutta Ultra Braid (http://www.calcuttafishingstore.com/products/lines-and-leaders/ultra-braid-line-30-pound-150-yards-green-ub-30-g-150.htm).

I must say I have been highly disappointed with this shit.  On too many instances I have had my knots have fail under very light tension; either slipping or tearing, I’m not sure which. Also, a simple line tangle or wind knot which would be a quick fix with mono, is an utter disaster with Calcutta Ultra. The knots that have failed are the Albright knot between my braid and my leader.  As a work around to this problem, I opted for an improved clinch knot to a swivel to my leader.  This too failed.   :smt013

Is there a secret repertoire of knots required for use with braid? Or is Calcutta Ultra just crappy? I am willing to give the braid one last try if I can isolate the source of my problems.

It might be the brand.I use 50# power pro and never had any problems.I mostly use mono but the few times that I use braid its always been power pro
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I tried Calcutta braid about 6yrs ago because it was on Clearance. It was in a different package and much older than this Ultra stuff you have. But anyways, I didn't like it at all. Still have half-a-spool in the garage somewhere...

Back in the day, when Spiderwire was one of the only braids on the market...they included a small booklet of knots for braid. And I've been tying the same knot for braid ever since. It looks like this and works great:

Dude I think that is what I just put on my new avet! :smt012
I got it because the shop was out of power pro and I needed it that day.

I have power pro 30# on all my go-to rods, except for my big gun which has 40# power pro. I'm sold on the braid for most of what I do.

I put 10-12 feet of 30# mono leader on using an uni-to-uni, and although it has failed a few times I believe it was due to my poor knots than the line itself. I like the bit of mono for better abrasion resistance (and detection), some shock absorption, and easy to tie knots on the water.

First of all most people I know use a palomar knot on braid or improved cinch knot when palomar isn't easy to do.  However I also like to use a topshot of 7-10ft of 25LB Mono, attached to the 30lb PowerPro braid via UNI-UNI knot and more recently the Alberto knot or AKA Improved Albright knot.  I never had the UNI-UNI fail on me, and is pretty easy to tie imho.

The Alberto knot I had some problems with it cutting my topshot, and I posted about it on here: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=48368.msg537877#msg537877

In the end I swapped out my Mono for a Seguar Floural and I haven't had an issue with it since.  I'm ordering a new set of spools of Berkely Big Game since I no longer trust my 7 year old spools of line.  Hopefully they wont break like my old line did.  So, it could also be your mono line...

Better test that stuff before it really matters...

I dont think it is the mono because the improved clinch knot failed at the braid to swivel also.  Im gonna go ahead and blame the Calcutta….Damned Calcutta BullSH!T   :smt106

Super slick 8 braid is awesome stuff especially if you use a spinning reel outfit. I have 30 lb. power pro slick 8 on Stradic 500 fj reels. I run two rods and reel for trolling and drifting. This stuff rarely tangles and cast a mile. So much better then the standard power pro braid on spinning reels.

Like you, I'm mostly a monofilament guy but I do have my braid applications.  For line-to-line knots, I typically use a blood knot to attach a monofilament leader to the braid.  Never had any issues.  For attaching terminal tackle directly to braid, a double clinch knot has always served me well.

However, I've never used the Calcutta stuff.  I've only used PowerPro, Spiderwire, and Fireline.  PowerPro is my favorite of the three.

I've had slippage problems , but now I put a few extra twists on my improved cinch or blood knots and it's OK.
The biggest thing for me has been  to have a tight - compact  wind.. I put new line on just like I would mono with light tension.  I had a backlash on my levelwind. The line dove so deep underneith that not even Polepole or the crew of the Islander could get it out. It was amazing how much line I had to cut off to get past the problem.

PowerPro is my favorite of the three.

Seems to be the popular choice.  Ill be looking into it.  Thanks everyone for the input.
