Hobie Kayak Decision

Post by WJH »

Few months ago bought a Hobie Revo 13 because wife had interest in kayaking but preferred the peddling to paddling. Since that time the Revo has not left the garage, never been used. I have a WS Ride 135 that I use for all my inshore, some BTB and lake fishing. I have thought about using the Revo but friend suggested I should trade it in for an Outback, better fishing platform. The dealer will trade out the Revo for the Outback since it has never been in the water.

So the question becomes keep the Revo or trade in for the Outback?
All input would be appreciated.

Both great yaks. I would figure whats more important to you...... speed revo. Stability outback. I fish the flats just fine in my revo.

Sounds to like your in a perfect spot. You have stability in the ride and speed in the revo. I fish in a revo and love it. I care more about covering lots of water than stability but that's me.

Had an outback and loved it but if you fish sitting or hanging over the edge you probably don't want the Outback.

Trade it. I bought my outback 2 years ago and love it. My outback has been btb, inshore, rivers and lakes. If you are unsure about it, take a rental for the weekend.

Thanks for all the input.

I stand and fish in my Ride 135, so dont plan on standing in the outback, like others have said the platform does not provide the best situation to stand. Would definitely be able to cover more water with the Revo 13 than the Ride. Probably cover more water in the Outback than the Ride, probably so. Would the Revo allow me to cover more water than the Outback? Not really concerned about stability, both are stable enough. I am 5'9 190, so can be comfortable in both.

What I am hearing both are great kayaks for a variety of fishing situations. I guess cant go wrong with either Kayak.

I use to stand and fish but my knees dont allow it for very long. I have learned to read the water and baitfish activity and dont need to stand. I sit side saddle in my revo and crab walk to tailing reds if the water is shallow enough. I like the layout better in the revo as well. Cant go wrong with either.

I had a ride 135 and revo ended up getting rid of the 135. I like the speed and layout of the revo better than the outback myself. With the amount of water you can cover in the revo it will be hard to go back to the ride.

I am 6'4" 240 and the Outback as never been hard for me to cover a lot of ground in. Never even came close to tipping. Get the turbo fins and it will move plenty fast. Especially if you go btb, the Outback is where it's at IMO. Either way, it's cool that they are willing to let you trade.

Is there any difference between the Revo and the Outback when fishing skinny water

Pretty sure the Revo can get in a little skinnier water. My outback turns into a tank in about a foot of water

Thanks for all the input.

Decided not to trade in the Revo for the Outback. Outback is a great fishing yak, but I feel for the exception of more stability and more storage space the Revo is more versatile for my needs. A better paddle yak for those situations if I encounter skinny water, advantage of covering more water more efficiently with the mirage drive, a great boat for offshore, and lighter in overall weight. Yes I give up stability and deck space but for my needs not that big of a issue.
