Hi Divers!

I'm looking into diving this year, but the thing is I've never swam in the ocean before. The only experience I've had is swimming in local pools and lakes.

I noticed that Sonoma Coast Divers offers a course on ab diving with the only real requirements being that the student be in good health, moderately in shape and able to swim.

Would you advise against taking a ab diving course your first time out? Any experiences with Sonoma Coast Divers?

No experience with them, but if a class makes you feel better about doing it then it would not hurt to attend a class.

I just found someone that had experience and tagged along.   I am not comfortable diving deep, so I just don't do it yet.  Know your limits.

Every diver will have developed their own techniques as they dive more. Take info from multiple sources and real life situations to fine tune what will work for you.

Good luck and hope to see you out in the ocean.

Hi,

A class will defintely help you becoming a better and, more importantly, a safer diver.  I took a class from Pacific Coast Free diving class last year and it was a game changer.  They hold their classes in Sonoma county (classroom section in Santa Rosa and ocean section in Mendo Bay).  It is not too often you got to learn from two world class free divers.  Highly recommended.

I dove the first year with experienced friends. In the off season I took Jon Lata's free dive class. I still have a lot to learn, but the class has paved the way for a more enjoyable, successful (not just plucking Abs), and a safer diving experience.

Tom Stone and the Sonoma coast divers are great. They used to be called the bamboo reef. They have been up here for a long time. They will probably take you to Tom's secret spot at Gerstle cove.
