Noyo to Mendo Headlands

And people were still suiting up to go out. Not a good day.  Hope they come back safe.

Dude i was out there on that sh#t, I stayed close to shore. There was about 4-5 guys out about 50yd I thought about it but im so glad I followed my gut instincts and consider this one a skunk.1st time for everything.my friend got his first gun and wanted to play around with it.so I sat on a rock and started stripping some of my gear and then a faint help! Help!.the guy was having a hard time swimming in on his float tube and started panicking. I rush over and I couldn't get to him since most of my exposure protection is off.I told him get in closer and ill pull him in.but luckily the waves push him in and not the other way.so after all that we were leaving and hiking along the shore I saw a black object pretty far out.then I noticed it was another diver on his float tube trying to paddle in.this guy was in serious trouble.I told my friend to not loose site of him and I ran to the parking lot hoping cal fish and wildlife would be there.nope the one time you kneedem and not there.so I ran back and this guy must've been swimming for an hour.there was a few times some serious waves crash over him thinking hes a gonner. I get in as close as I can and shouted to him to swim hard and get close and ill try to grab him.but he signals to me to swim out but I couldn't not in those conditions. So I told my friend to try and call for help on someone phone. So the whole time im thinking where the hell are his group you know friends at.but luckily a few good sized waves push him in and I ran over to him and he looks at me says thanks and walks away.this could've been a very bad day for a couple of guys.he still had his weight belt on spear gun hanging off of his belt.if that was me I would've dumped all my gear.this was the worse water ive been in.abalone is great food but not worth my life.what's really sad is everyone that walk by thought he was my friend. Craziest day diving ever
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Wow. Pics look great. I can just imagine all the energy I would be feeling just watching the water from near. But No shape to tackle that. Good job looking out. Those guys were lucky the tide was coming in  :smt009

Nice work, dune12.

Think how many rescues there'd be if no one based their dive day on the forecast!  In other words, today's forecast was not one to go diving on.  Not a foul going to the ocean and getting wet, but great job making the call to stay out of harm's way.

Glad you had some sense to stay in.  If any members have the opportunity to tell others stories like this maybe it will save a life.  Someone may think its just not worth it.

I have been paying attention to weather and buoy reports for the last couple weeks, but have also been going out and looking at different locations.  Based on other threads, you just cant make a decision based on reports alone.  I was watching at the Mendo headlands for about ten minutes this am and saw one sneaker wave that was double the size of all the others.  It was massive and splashed all the way to the parking area.  Wish I could have got a photo, but it sure woke me up to the dangers others have talked about.  Different when you see it first hand or see how close others really are to dangers on days like this.

Stay safe.
