Hi I'm shortly moving lock stock and literally barrel to a small island on the west coast of Scotland. My VW Transporter fitted with an EasyLoader will have a 15ft dinghy and my sea kayak so fully loaded....I also would like to take my Grumman on top of the CRV.....now as it's a one way trip I'm reluctant to fork out £150 for a rack for the CRV......I've looked into foam blocks and inflatable racks and they both seem to have problems....I obviously have the option of van topping the Grumman when I come back down south to visit family but it would be good to take it on the first run....any ideas?.

Won't the Grumman fit inside the dinghy?

One option might be to buy my used and surplus roof bars for CRV at around a third or so of the new cost!!!

what age & model CRV have u got, I have bars for at least one if not two of them.

Mine is the latest version of the CRV with the little upturn on the base of the rear window, unlike the previous version which had a straight line on the bottom of the window......distance might not be a problem as I will be staying near Stonehenge during May......

The bars I have were definitely not bought for the current model so unless Thule site confirms the same foot pack on the latest model as the previous one then it won't work. Cheers

A cheap source of foam strips is water pipe insulation, if you go to a big plumbers merchants they will have a selection of sizes so you can maybe spread the weight over 3 or 4 contact points so as not to damage the car roof. Fit the towing eyes front and back as the main anchor points
