Fire burned a lakeside storage shed in Lake Oswego early Tuesday, destroying at least a dozen kayaks and paddleboards at the private Lakewood Bay Community Club.

No one was injured in the blaze. Damage was estimated at $40,000.

Fire Marshal Gert Zoutendijk, Lake Oswego Fire Department spokesman, said residents called 911 at 1:05 a.m. after seeing fire blazing across Lakewood Bay. Arriving firefighters found 30-to-40-foot flames shooting from a storage shed at 602 Cabana Lane.

"A storage building on top of a deck that is built over Lakewood Bay was fully involved in flames," Zoutendijk said. "The fire also had spread to the deck."

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

Zoutendijk said about 20 kayaks and paddleboards were stored in the shed. Fewer than a dozen escaped damage. He said the fire caused about $25,000 in structural damage and $15,000 in damage to the kayaks, paddleboards and other recreational equipment – all privately owned.

He said cause of the fire officially remains undetermined. He said a contractor recently had been staining the deck, so investigators could not rule out oily rags or improper disposal of a cigarette or other smoking materials.
