Hey all! Haven't been around here in awhile, but I recently got to fish off of a Hobie and am interested in upgrading from my Wildy Tarpon 16 to a pedal drive. I'd be doing a little bit of everything on it, from bass fishing to trolling on lakes/ocean, spearfishing, fly fishing, and transport while hunting. I'm sure this topic has been covered exhaustively on here, but maybe not quite to my specific needs. Any and all input is appreciated!

Thanks, Jack

Take a look at the Vibe Shearwater 125. This is the Yak that I use as well as a handful of good friends. Great platform for fly fishing due to the perch you can mount to the seat for site casting. Super stable extremely difficult to tip. I can stand on the side and it will not tip! Plus you will not brake the bank.... The Vibe Pedal drive is exactly the same as a hobie, could literally swap them out!

Much appreciated! My brother just bought a Vibe and seems to love it. Do you know of any places in our area that allow demos? I only know Clavey’s and that yak shop in Santa Rosa

that shearwater looks great.  the most significant detraction seems to b the 85# bare hull weight.

Ya that is the one downside but it's the same weight as a Hobie Mirage Outback not to mention almost 1/2 the price. But with that said I put the Shearwater on top of my lifted Tacoma to transport (Camper shell) I lift one end of "The Barge" onto the roof rack then back end.... Super simple!

Again, if anyone wants to try one out let me know and can meet up with my spare!

the Santa Rosa Shop..Wind Toys is 100% Hobie boats.

i love my Mirage Drive on my Hobie.  hands down, it is super strong.  i can fight current and winds at the same time.  i have had to tow a Native that got on the wrong side of tide/winds and was losing all forward movement.

Before purchasing Hobie Compass I also consulted this forum with conditions I would be fishing in. I am so glad making the right choice of Mirage drive for the reasons below:
1. Strong and reliable power, can easily use half stroke motion to drive the pedal
2. Won't get caught by seaweeds- This is#1 lifesaver for my local condition
3. Kick-up fin and 180 reverse drive is very easy to use
4. Drive itself is lightweight and easy to stored away

The main reason buying a Compass is because it's lighter than Outback, a happy medium even is still quite heavy for a 58 yr old. If weight is not an issue I will definely go for Outback's better adjustable seat.
