Although many of us wish we could get on whitewater everyday, it may simply not be possible due to low water or worthwhile endeavors such as work, family, and everyday life. Nevertheless, many towns with nearby local runs can make this dream a temporary reality, such as Chattanooga, TN. With close local runs such as North Chick Creek, Suck Creek, Richland Creek, and Bear Creek, local paddlers can be on the water within 15-30 minutes.

Out of all of these local runs, Suck Creek may be the ultimate pre or post work class IV-V special. You may have heard of this creek, but don’t let the name fool you… Suck Creek rocks. It gets its name from an old rapid in the Tennessee River before the Chickamauga and Nickajack Dams called the Suck. The whole section takes roughly 15-20 minutes with a steady pace and offers an array of class IV-V rapids. Plus, the creek is only 15 minutes from downtown Chattanooga. The lines can be tight and there is no shortage of rocks, but once you learn the routes, you’re sure to get your whitewater fix for the day. This short video shows some of my favorite moves on Suck Creek at a medium flow of 0.5. Enjoy!
