Hi all!

My name's Brian and I am a grad student at UC Davis, studying aquatic ecology. I work mostly in Suisun Marsh and the delta and love fishing everywhere I go. I previously fished from my small aluminum boat and from shore, but am excited to get on the water under human power! Thanks to Uminchu for hookin' it up with a kayak!!! I'm really excited to join the NCKA community.

Cheers,
Brian

Hi there. I'm Buttercup. And go by that name. New to the world of kayaking and hoping there are some folks who like to train. Thank you!

Welcome, I remember spending obsessive hours studying for safety through these threads because of fear of dying and many encouragements from fellow kayakers.
I'm guessing you may have kayaked a bit already?  Practicing kayaking in the areas that you want to fish, while being paranoididly safe is your best start. I remember spending hours driving all over the bay area looking and observing known launches and picturing the procedure and not even launching.  I became obsessed studying weather and tides and still am. Going to launches to compare weather pages to actual conditions.  Eventually you cannot stand it because you just gotta go, like Eddie, not me, but the other Eddie... :smt005  I tell ya', that first push and leap aboard is the beginning of the end.   Even if you launch and are back on shore in 10 minutes from your first "very safe" awkward lesson, it is a victory because you got water time.  I also remind you, there is nothing "safe" about the ocean and kayak fishing, it is an adventure to be on the water anywhere you are.
After you get confident in kayaking, with all your safety gear managed, the next step is to read all the threads you can find on the species you are targeting then go kayak "with a fishing rod".  I'm guessing you've fished for many years.   Over time I'm sure you'll be teaching us all your discoveries and other supernewbs will benefit as well as all of us.
Like others will always mention, there are professional guides on this forum, LoletaEric, Bushy, that would have saved me countless hours, money, and fails by tagging along with a pro for some solid lessons that took many trips to discover.
Hope to see a pic of the scenery of your maiden voyage... :smt006

As Eddie said there are guides like Bushy, Loleta, and myself on here. I would highly suggest taking one of my free clinics that I do for NCKA down here in Monterey. The next clinic is March 7th and we will be going over rescues and re-entries. Book a spot at (800)649-5357 it is completely free.

I love my Kayak but I live on the American River Middle Fork so I have to get out when I have to get out.  Whether it be Land or Sea.  :smt001
