My friend Joe works at the Hostel
Reports rescue operations currently underway
If it’s one of us or not, I hope all are safe

I’ll report any new info

We were there for the anniversary open house yesterday and went by to see a neighbor who is a docent.  Watched the rescue.  Copy of my post from Coastside follows.  Wind and currents I think.  The middle kayaker was not making much headway.

Was down to Pigeon Point lighthouse for the 150 anniversary open house. Very interesting. Original burned LARD in the lamp, then kerosene. Went by today to see a friend who is a docent. Talked to a kayaker coming in to Whalers Cove. Wondered if I saw the other two kayaks. Way out could see one that was not making much headway against wind and current and one only visible with the binoculars. CG helo showed up and a rescue diver went down to the far out kayak. He had called for help. They hauled him up to the helicopter and the rescue diver was paddling in the kayak it looked like. Why go so far out when the winds are up and decent swells? Especially not staying together for safety. Wonder if he gets a bill for rescue? I think they only had cell phones and not radios. The first kayaker had one 22” Ling.

I fished that place a couple of times.  The best times to fish it is when it feels like you're running hard on a treadmill to stay in one spot.  You will drift so far and so fast if you stop and in the fog....you won't even know you're moving that fast until you're miles away

Does rescued yakker get billed for the helo and rescue expenses, or does Johnny Taxpayer foot the bill?

Some pretty interesting info on that topic here:

This is an interesting read too:

Damn, that’s crazy. Had some of that once offshore in the San Juan Islands, WA. So startling how fast it moves you and you might not notice right away.

I’m much more aware and watchful of that since.

The picture make it look a lot nicer than it was.  Lots of sheep in the meadow.  Lots of white caps and looked like a couple really big current lines.
