My reliable Diawa Saltist 30TH reel suddenly lost drag.  Even I crank the star drag as hard as I can, it doesn't have much drag.  Initially, I thought I had a broken drag washer but all the washers were fine.  I replaced all drag washers with carbontex washers with lightly coated Cal's Universal drag grease.  I disassembled the reel several times without any progress.

I checked the following items:

  • drag spring washer position ()
  • drag washer positions per the diagram
  • A/R pawl

If you have any repair suggestions or repair shop recommendations (Sacramento area), please let me know.

Thank you for your assistance.

Its happened to me.  I spooled my spectra wrong

https://www.avetreels.net/braided-line-precautions/

I think you might found my problem.  I marked the spool with the maximum drag and started pulling the line.  The line is coming out but spool is not rotating.  I will unspool the line and respool per the instruction.

Thank you and I will let you know if it solves my issue.

I plan to place several feet of mono backing to prevent slippage.

That or throw down a wrap or 2 of electrical tape- That has been my go to and i have never had a slipping issue.  Grabs like nobodys business.

I read on several website articles stating that using electrical tape is fine for freshwater use but for saltwater.  It could potentially cause intense corrosion under the tape.
You might want to inspect under the tape to see if you got any corrosion.

Thank you to FishingAddict, my drag works perfectly.
I added approximately 10 yards of Fluorocarbon leader to the begining of the braided line using FG knot.
By adding FC line, it adds friction and prevents line slipping.

Thank you.

A few years ago I had a brand new Daiwa Lexa 300 that I spooled with spectra.  On my first trip out with it, the same thing happened to me.  I thought it had no drag. I thought the reel was defective so I sent back to Daiwa for repairs.  I got it back with a note that they took the line off and wrapped electrical tape on the bottom of the spool and respooled it back. It worked just fine after that.
Now I put electric tape on my reels loaded with spectra. I use spectra mainly for saltwater.  I fish a lot but too lazy to post reports.

That makes sense if salt gets trapped under there!  I rinse my gear off within an hour of my trips everytime 100% of the time so it has not been an issue for me. I change it out each season and see no issues so far. Infact, one of the reels I use is a reel I actually caught while striper fishing last winter! I thought I had snagged some kelp but ended up reeling in a Phoenix Black Diamond and a Avet 5.3.  Still had the salmon flasher and ball on it! That reel is corroded to hell though, but internally just fine after a rebuild! I know a lot of companies have started putting a rubber strip on their spools for this reason.
