What’s up, guys?

I’m considering taking the fam (wife, baby, and pooch) up to a little rental cabin near Lake Spaulding for a few days. This would be a non-yak trip - probably bring our little 12 foot Gregor aluminum so the whole fam can get out on the water together.

Anyone have any experience boating or fishing out there? A quick Google search shows that the lake holds rainbows (stocked I assume?) and browns, and it seems trolling Rapalas is a good approach.

Also interested in learning about any other fishing opportunities near Emigrant Gap. (Bear River?)

Tips welcome!

Cheers,

~Alex

Thanks for the tip! Fuller is only about 13 minutes away from the cabin we rented. Any suggestions for the best baits/lures/methods to try if we opt for Fuller?

Loney Meadow is tucked away up there south of Fuller I think.  If you can find it and it's still accessible it's a real gem - brookies in the little Texas Creek.  Haven't been there in eons.

Have fun!   :smt001

Thanks Eric! I’ll take a look at a map. Brookies are tons of fun when you find them.

This is not a fishing response but when you mentioned Lake Spaulding at this time of year, I think about taking my kayak up the lake to where the Yuba river dumps in. I would drag it up on the rocks and then climb up the first little waterfall and dive into the cold plunge pool, swim across the small pool of water then climb over the next little fall and into the next plunge pool... and then keep going pool after pool. It was neat.

One year there were trout trapped in every pool.  Only saw that once. On a hot day the cold water feels great but... really cold!  You could get up there and tie off the boat.

One more thing. They tell you to stay on the south side (I think) away from the power plant flume.  I’ve seen that thing dumping water in the lake. It creates a gigantic whirl pool. Do not be near it. (I’ve seen these on the Pit River as well) They are not BS’ing about it’s power.  It is an awesome sight but you’re screwed if you’re in it. If you’re near it and you hear it... it’s too late. Follow there advice and stay away from the flume.

Here's a quick bullet point "report" from my trip:

* That whole area is really beautiful!
* We spent most of a day at the Fuller Lake day use area. Most of our time there was spent on shore picnicking, relaxing, taking the pooch out exploring, etc, but we did lauch our little 12 foot Gregor.
* Actual "fishing" time was very limited. I did manage to troll a little Buoyant spoon for about 10 minutes, and that's all it took to catch and release a beautiful little 11-12" rainbow. It looked like a native fish, but may have just been a very healthy planter.

Fuller Lake is a neat spot. I'll definitely be back there some day and hopefully explore the other lakes up the road from Fuller, too. Fuller is a tiny lake that's ideal for kayaks, float tubes, stand up paddle boards, etc. We actually felt like our 12 foot Gregor was way overkill, but it was nice being out there with the whole fam+dog together.
