Hey everyone, so I've been fishing with a diawa lexa on a ML trevala and a battle 600 on a MH pen rod. Been thinking about getting a second conventional rod and reel, maybe one more dedicated for trolling as I already have a great jigging rod reel. Was thinking about getting a Penn squall. Really not sure what rod to get. Is having a rod reel combo dedicated for trolling a good idea? I mainly fish for halibut salmon and lingcod. Total noob, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey deepseadrew, welcome! You could get by with using your current setup ML trevala/Lexa for halibut and lings/rockfish. For salmon, I'd probably get a longer soft tip rod that's 8'6" and up. The Penn squall is a good reel for the price and def good enough for trolling. But if you really want a great reel that can handle just about anything...I'd go for an Avet. It's lasted me for a while with very little maintenance...My $0.02

I bought a penn squall about 3-4 years ago, didn't even last one season on the kayak.  I had to send it back for warranty repair.  I got it back and now I have to take it apart every year to clean it.  Salt water intrusion.  If you go with penn I would stay away from squall and do at least their fathom line.  I have three fathoms, 2 lever drags and a levelwind for 2 years now with no problem.  I've had them apart and no signs of saltwater inside.  I agree with having a dedicated trolling rod for salmon.  I have 2 penn levelwinds dedicated to trolling with a fast action light rods for salmon and 2 heavier rods with lever drag or level winds for bottom fishing.  But I have a tandem and typically always have 2 people so I need 4 rods.
I'm sure lots of people will chime in, but yes, you should have at least 2-3 setups for kayak fishing out here!  It's more that salmon fishing requires light rod, fast action, which isn't the greatest for deep dropping 8oz of weight for jigging halibut/lingcod/rockfish.

I like my Shimano Tekota reels. Not cheap, but they seem to be good general-purpose reels to me, and they are pretty easy to self-service. As for rods, I use cheapo ones and have not yet been able to blame any of my many fishing inadequacies on a cheap rod...

Looks like you have room for a round conventional reel setup.

I have a penn squall levelwind that I bought for trolling, but I keep going back to my narrowed Penn Jigmasters.  I like the Jigmasters because they can take a beating in salt, they're simple, very customizable, and they're very easy to service yourself.  I actually prefer non-levelwinds too.

I also fish out of a tandem, and my 2 go to setups for this halibut season have been a seeker 270-7 and a Cousins CLB70XL both with narrowed Jigmasters.

Avets are great too.

I just went through this process of adding a salmon setup to my collection.

I’ve been using 7’ parabolic rod with an avet sx for the past few years without any issues.

However I wanted a salmon specific setup which for me meant a longer rod and a reel that was both level wind, star drag and had a LC so I picked up the new tekota 500LC and paired it with an 8’6 tdr shimano trolling rod.

The tekota was $180 new on eBay and the TDR rod was only $30 new on Amazon.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Are the 8'6" rods trouble to deal with in a kayak? Are you guys opting for longer rods to get the lines further away from the kayak? Thinking about getting a fathom based on the replies but haven't checked out everything everyone has suggested yet.

the length is a pain.  But the utility of a longer rod cannot be understated when u must run long a55 leaders and dodger/flasher setups.

I haven’t had much issues with a 8’6” rod and i guess it’s something you get use to on a kayak. There are guys that even use 10’ long salmon rods. I’m sure you could probably find a shorter limber rod for salmon, but 8’6 seems to be the shortest length available for salmon/steelhead specific  rods. I learned my lesson once when trying to bring in a big salmon with a trevala. It didn’t have enough flex to absorb the force and ended up losing it.

Sorry to Hijack at all, Was wondering if the rod I've got would work well. I've got a Ugly Stick Salmon Steelhead rod 8'6 Medium Heavy, Mod. Fast Action 10-20lbs line rating, .5 - 1.5 oz lure weight. would be nice to use an existing rod :).

I hate dealing with noodley 8.5ft rods on the kayak. My preferred length for trolling (salmon, halibut, striper) is 7.5 to 8ft max. I also try to look for rods with shorter-than-normal butt sections. Because most of the “trolling rods” have abnormally-long butt sections...which is annoying when you’re sitting down with a PFD on (not a problem for boat fishing tho).
One reel to consider that hasn’t been mentioned is the classic round Abu Garcias. I really like the 7000 series as a multi-purpose wrkhorse. And they make them with linecounters if you prefer that (I don’t).

For tehpenguins, if you mean salmon trolling then that rod is too light. The typical salmon trolling rig creates a LOT of drag (regardless if its a Deep6, spring release, flasher, dodger, or bait).

That sounds like more of a river fishing rod, but it could also make a decent mooching or downrigfer trolling rod (for salmon). Not sure it would be a good match for trolling with a double deep six diver (~7 ounces of lead plus drag).
