Hi all. My name is Keith and I'm a fisherman just getting into kayak fishing. I've had several kayaks that I've used for diving the north coast and cruising lakes and have a tandem ocean kayak sot. I'm working on buying a hobie revo or outback for salmon and rock fishing the Marin coast. I have a 23' Seacraft ocean fishing boat that I use for fishing but wanted to start kayak fishing too. I'm going to look at a used revo 13 this week.
Question, the revo has rod holders that are behind you. Is it a problem seeing the fish on in time with the rod behind you? Do you normally install rod holder towards the bow?

Thanks

I bought a used revo. The guy had installed two Scotty flush mounts. It's a 2013 revolution and I love it. It's a wet ride but it's stable and fast. The 2014 is transducer ready I believe. I was having a hard time choosing between the outback and revo but glad I went with it. I imagine you can't go wrong with either though

Thanks for the advice. Probably going to get one of each. My fiance is worried about stability so this way she, or others, can use the more stable outback.

Read the rules about number of posts and seeing more of the forum so here we go. I'll have the dig for old kayak pictures since it's been a while diving off of one but here are some recent salmon and trout fishing pictures.

Found one. I had two dagger SOT kayaks that I used for diving.

Welcome to NCKA, Keith.

The rod holders behind the seat are for your net and an extra rod - basically no one runs an active line from one of those.  You have it right - people install holders in front of them for trolling.

The Revo and the Outback are both great kayaks.  I consider the Outback to be the state of the art for the sport right now.  I paddle though - for now.

Come on up to Shelter Cove for a trip if you're looking for a way to leap-frog the learning curve and get a chance at salmon, two species of halibut, thresher sharks, lots of rockfish and lingcod and a few other species of flat fish.

Great advice.  Thank you, that makes sense.  I'll  most likely start going out of Muir Beach area but if I end up heading towards Shelter Cove, I'll give you a shout.

Thanks.

Thanks.  That was from a couple weeks ago in front of Muir Beach.
