Craziest Rockfish I’ve ever seen...

Xanthic Gopher (or Black and Yellow, pending DNA confirmation).

Fuzz found it and called me over to film it...unsure if my footage would turn out ok, and sure it wasn’t a no-take species, the decision was made to euthanize it with a humanely placed spear to the brain...for #science  :smt003

Sent Matt Michie aka steelhead some pics on the ride home, and asked if he thought the local DFW Biologists might be interested in checking it out. He confirmed they would be, and fuzz left the fish with me.

First Amadeo came over to take some pics for future reference, then Ken Oda came to pick up the fish so it could be analyzed back at the lab by Dr. Bob Lea.

Apparently fish will sometimes get this beautiful golden/orange/yellow coloration, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium has one of these Xanthic/Orange colored Bny/gophers on display, but this is one of the first actually harvested for examination.

More info on this coloration here:

https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=78262&inline=1

Quote
“To date, no orange black-and-yellow rockfish or gopher rockfish have been reported. Xanthic coloration has been observed off the California coast in what likely was one of those two species (Medlin 2012), but was not confirmed as the fish was not landed”.

I will post here once the DNA results are back to confirm if black and yellow or gopher or ??

If it turns out to be a new species fuzz decided it should be called the Golden Shower Rockfish.

After the inspection was done, Ken asked me if I wanted it back to eat, but I told him to go ahead and cook it. He prepared it with a wild mushroom risotto. :smt004

Pretty cool stuff!!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

So fuzz spends a year living in a cave.....goes out in crappy conditions and shoots a ling and two reds......and an extremely rare mutant rockfish, that nobody has ever harvested before.

Does the mythical fuzz really exist?

But, I have to admit that I thought this thread was going to be about the University of Minnesota...

So fn cool. It's so bright! Did the biologists explain the coloration? I wonder if it's an albino coloration or something similar. Love your vids and pics Jim, its no wonder everyone on rhis board speaks about the legend of Big Jim.
