Hello everyone. I’m fairly new to kayaking and kayak fishing. I’ve been a fisherman for a long time (from a boat) but I’m trying to break into kayak fishing. Any recommendations on an affordable, pedal driven kayak? I am currently looking at the Riot Mako 10 and the Hobie Passport. I am open to any and all brands and models. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard, amac.  Many people who get into this sport start with a more affordable model, and then when they realize that they've entered into a new lifestyle they upgrade to a high quality board.  The sport is not only addicting - it's infectious.

If you're looking to pedal I recommend putting plenty of consideration into the Outback or Revo.  I'm a paddler myself, but the Outback is, IMO, the state of the art for the sport right now - no doubt.

Best of luck.  Come on up to Shelter Cove and do a day on an overstable paddle yak with me, and I'll show you the ropes of safety, forecasts, gear, multi-species targeting...etc.

+1

Another thing to consider is that Hobies (new and used) hold their value. So, if you decide to sell later, you should get a reasonable price...

Welcome. I’m new to kayakfishing also. Got the outback about 3 months ago. Have been out 5 or 6 times. Handled windy conditions better than I did. Still learning how to rig things cus I’m right handed but reel lefty. Have to say was a little heavy in the self rescue class but learned my go to techniques on self rescue. I figured pay a price one time for years of fun and so far am not disappointed. Good luck on your choice.

Hey there amac, welcome!

I'm pretty new to Kayak fishing Started out on a paddle and I decided really fast I wanted a peddle. I've got a 2016 Hobie Outback, and it's a dream, only downside of the pedal yaks is they are quite a bit heavier to get on top of the truck, but so nice out on the water.

learning as much safety especially self rescue is really important, you never know when you're going to have an off day and flip the kayak from even just leaning over too far in calm conditions.
