Spain’s Ander Elosegi completed a perfect Pyrenees Cup canoe slalom campaign with victory in the men’s C1 in Spain on the weekend, following on from his win in France one week earlier.

The three-time Olympian was the only male canoe athlete to complete the La Seu course without a penalty, finishing in a time of 92.15. He edged out Poland’s Grzegorz Hedwig (94.24) and Spanish teammate Miquel Trave (95.35), with both athletes attracting a two-second penalty.

In the women’s C1, Australia’s Jessica Fox began 2019 where she left off 2018, with a strong win. Despite a two-second penalty, Fox finished in 104.60, with Austria’s Viktoria Wolffhardt second on 107.55.

France’s Lucie Baudu, a K1 silver medalist in Pau one week earlier, took bronze in the C1 on Sunday in a time of 108.84.

Rio Olympic bronze medalist Jiri Prskavec made a long overdue return to the top of the podium with a win in the men’s K1.

The Czech speedster finished in 84.50, more than one second ahead of Australia’s Lucien Delfour in 86.00, with France’s Mathurin Madore third in 86.43.

Jessica Fox was a notable absentee from the women’s K1 final, after missing a gate and picking up a 50-second penalty in the semi-final.

In the absence of the reigning world champion, France’s Camille Prigent sneaked home for victory in a time of 99.21.

She edged out Rio Olympic gold medalist, Maialen Chourraut, who was hoping to repeat her gold-medal winning performance from the previous weekend but fell short by just 0.30 seconds.

Russia’s Marta Kharitonova was third in 99.92.

The opening ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup for 2019 will be in Lee Valley, England, in June.
