Krugersdorp youngster the top paddler at FLCC

Jaemi Wellish earned the top U/18 girls' position on the log, with 163 points for the year.

The Gauteng Canoe Union Schools’ League organises monthly races at various dams throughout Gauteng, where juniors participate in age-appropriate race distances.

Points are awarded on a sliding scale for each paddler who completes a race, and the points accumulate to the year-end prize-giving where the individual paddlers are recognised and awarded medals and trophies, while the accumulated points are credited to the school represented, and also to the club where the juniors train.

Clubs/ schools with high numbers of paddlers represented obviously achieve the highest overall points, worked on numbers.

The year begins with the sprint events preparing juniors for the South African Inter-provincial Inter-school Kayak Competition which takes place during the April/ Easter school holidays in different provinces, after which the juniors move to the marathon distances till the prize-giving in November.

At the prize-giving for 2018, which took place after the final race of the year at Homestead Dam in Benoni, earlier in November, the small group of young paddlers who train at Florida Lake Canoe Club achieved exceptionally well, with Jaemi Wellish – a Krugersdorp youngster – earning the top U/18 girls’ position on the log, with 163 points for the year.

The top-achieving junior paddlers at Florida Lake Canoe Club earned the club an accumulated 793 points, and a fifth position on the log, competing against clubs and schools where the sport is recognised as a school sport and encouraged in high numbers.
