Tobin Section of the NF Feather River's Dangerous Retaining Wall

American Whitewater, along with our partners at California Sportfishing Protection Alliance and Trout Unlimited, are requesting remediation by Union Pacific Railroad of the ongoing and increasingly serious threat to public safety caused by the instability of the Railroad’s retaining wall and adjacent hill slope on the North Fork of the Feather River near Tobin, California. For the past two years we have observed continuing erosion of the embankment behind the retaining wall. This erosion threatens the stability of the retaining wall and the railroad bed. Failure of this section of Union Pacific’s rail system would impact public safety, the ecosystem on the North Fork Feather River, and the water supply for much of California. 

 

Bonus Flows on Rock Creek and Cresta Sections of NF Feather

The Rock Creek and Cresta reaches of the Feather have been running higher than normal for the past month. PG&E is performing maintenance on the large Drum Gates, which are used for high flow releases. Flows have stabilized in the 800 to 900 cfs range but will be lowered down to 50 cfs starting on November 1st and continuing to November 5th. Flows will come back up to the 800 cfs range on the 5th and stay high until the project is completed. Repairs are expected to finish by November 23rd for the Rock Creek Dam and November 30th for the Cresta Dam. As always, check the gages before you go, as things can change.
