The ocean was calm and clear this weekend! I was able to sneak in a quick evening dive on Saturday before the wife got home from her work trip to SF (the new 82' blue what sculpture at Chrissy Field to raise awareness of ocean pollution (NEWS ARTICLE HERE). She works at the Aquarium as the media relations gal responsible for networking with all the big players like Animal Planet and Travel Channel - a true advocate for conservation. Dove the Monterey side of the peninsula. Super surgey, got smacked into several walls full of urchin and still picking spines out of my knees and fingers but the visibility was pretty great (~20') and so was the fishing. I shot a decent ling and never had so many blues show up in a huge school. You couldn't even see through them. Also found a few nice other RF.

The next morning I woke up and dove Carmel area. Way less surge and even better vis (~30'). For an area that is typically fishy, it was pretty dead. Found one medium size ling and a couple nice RF. Passed on a couple cabezon due to legal but not great size. Found some new deep caves. At one point, dove over the edge of a cliff, down the back and into a crack that opened up into a nice cave (3' tall 6' deep and at the back it had a small window about the size of a basket ball into another part of the cave. On my first dive into it, I was at the end of my breath when I looked through the window to see probably the biggest blue I've ever found. I should have taken the shot because when I got back down and in there, it was gone, no where to be found. I wasn't confident on a good shot so I didn't pull the trigger. Better to not shoot than to harm and not harvest.  I ended up running into my free dive instructor out there and finished up my level 1 free dive cert (Bamboo Reef in Monterey now offers Level 1 and soon Level 2 certification). At one point on the line dive, we dove down 50' and just laid on the sandy bottom watching a big bat ray from arms length away. That was pretty neat! My bottom time is so much better when I'm not focused on hunting -  I'm aiming to join the 100' club before the end of the year. Ended up diving from 9a-2p just because it was such a nice day. Great weekend!

Our baby shower is next Saturday and we have friends staying with us so I'm hoping to squeeze in a really early Saturday morning dive and then be in Carmel Valley by 10a to start setting up. Wish me luck!

P.s. I highly encourage getting your Level 1 Cert. Even though I've been diving for a few years and relatively decent at it, I still learned a ton about better techniques and safety. Hit up Rebekah at Bamboo Reef!
