Hikianalia is San Fran-bound! After weeks of delays, canoe departs for CA
SAND ISLAND, OAHU (HAWAIINEWSNOW) - About 100 people gathered on the docks at Sand Island Saturday morning to send off Hokulea's sister voyaging canoe, Hikianalia.
The canoe is bound for San Francisco to continue the Malama Honua campaign, inspiring action to promote a healthy environment and culturally thriving world.
The California departure was delayed for almost three weeks due to weather, but now the crew is on track to reach San Francisco's aquatic park on Sept. 16. Their arrival is set to coincide with the Global Climate Action Summit.
"While sailing to California on a vessel powered by wind and sun, the crew will demonstrate the important relationship between humanity and nature as the crew navigates their way to California using cues from the stars, wind and ocean, rather than a GPS or other modern navigational instruments" the Polynesian Voyaging Society said in a news release.
Crew members will also conduct community outreach to inspire future voyagers.
Along the way, scientists on board will be collecting water samples to monitor health of the ocean.
The 2,800-mile voyage is expected to take 30 days, weather permitting. The canoe will be back in Hawaii by December.
