Department of Conservation to take folks kayaking and fishing

The Missouri Department of Conservation is offering an opportunity for people to float a Missouri stream and learn paddling and fishing techniques.

Participants will learn basic kayak paddling and basic fishing techniques before embarking on the one-day float Saturday on the Big Piney River near Licking, according to an MDC news release.

MDC will provide transportation to and from the river and all kayaking and fishing equipment. Participants ages 13 and up are welcome, although those younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult who participates in the program. People older than 15 must be licensed to fish.

Participants are encouraged to wear swimming clothing or clothing that can get wet. They should bring a towel, sunscreen, bug spray and a change of clothing for the trip back to Jefferson City. Closed-toed shoes are required. Participants should bring a small cooler with lunch and enough snacks and drinks for an all-day float. Alcohol and beverages in glass containers are prohibited.

Participants will meet at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Runge Conservation Center in Jefferson City and will return about 8 p.m. Return time is subject to change based on river conditions, weather and other factors.
