Wrestling Class: Are you ready to rumble? Boys ages 4-12 are invited to a free two-day event at the Allendale Community Center to become American men through the world's oldest sport of real wrestling. Event is Friday and Saturday, June 29-30, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Call or text Shekinah at (803) 450-7488 to register.

Barnwell Independence Day Celebration: The City of Barnwell’s Independence Day Celebration is Friday, June 29 from 5-9:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Barnwell. Enjoy an evening of music, food, fun and fireworks. The 282nd Army Band Brass Quintet will perform.

Veterans Appreciation: The Community Rural Arts Work League (CRAWL) of Bamberg County will hold a Veterans’ Appreciation event on June 29 for its Lawn Chair Leisure Series at 7:30 p.m. at Art Park (927 Hagood Avenue, Denmark). Children will join in patriotic, creative activities that include health and nutrition. Local Voice of the Promise Zone artist, Glyshae (a.k.a. Ashley Jordan) and women’s trio The Flame Within will provide music including World War II selections such as Ms. Otis Regrets and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy for all. Luminaries will be available for attendees to honor or memorialize veterans and current armed service persons. The event is free. Persons who wish to dedicate the Points of Light luminaries are urged to come early. Luminaries will remain throughout the night to be extinguished on the morning of June 30. Provided seating will be limited; therefore, it is suggested to bring personal lawn chairs. Other local artists have been invited to participate. CRAWL functions under the umbrella of the South Carolina Arts Commission’s Art of Community: Rural SC.

Community Table Potluck: The Allendale County Community Relations Council will host a free Community Table Potluck on Friday, June 29 at 6 p.m. at Hickory and Flat streets in Allendale. Bring a dish, such as a dessert, fruit tray, chicken, to share. The event aims to disband barriers in the community while promoting unity.

Community Youth Day: Community Youth Day will be Saturday, June 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lemon Park in Barnwell. This free event will involve fun between local officers and youth. There will be games and activities with a chance for prizes, as well as food and a live DJ. A 7-on-7 flag football game (youth versus officers) will be held. Lupus Awareness: Tiffanie Haynes and Courtney Buckmon are hosting “Paint Blava Purple Lupus Kickoff” on June 30 at 4 p.m. in the Blackville Community Center courtyard. All lupus survivors are asked to attend but the entire community is welcomed. There will be refreshments and entertainment. Wear purple.

Snelling July 4th Celebration: There will be live music, a waterslide and fireworks at the Snelling Town Park on Wednesday, July 4. Bring picnic food to share. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Fireworks at dusk.

First Thursday Bingo: First Thursday Bingo will be held Thursday, July 5 at 6 p.m. at the Allendale Community Center. First game is free. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and games begin at 6. Prizes will be awarded and hot fish will be sold. For more info, call (803) 702-1055.

First Friday: First Friday will have a Western theme on Friday, July 6 at 7 p.m. at the Allendale Community Center and Farmers Market. Musical guests will be Gene Williams and The Rhythm Kings performing Motown hits. There will also be food, fun and a mechanical bull. Bring your chairs and coolers. RECREATION

Swimming: The Barnwell State Park’s swimming area is now open for the season. Swimmers can swim at their own risk from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week through Labor Day.

Edisto Kayak/Canoe Trip: The South Fork Canoe/Kayak Patriotic Paddle Trip is Saturday, July 7. This is a 6-mile paddle that will leave from Bobcat Landing (meet at 9 a.m.) to Brabham Landing. Celebrate Independence Day by decorating canoes & kayaks. Free shuttle. Donations accepted ($10 a year recommended). Bring your own boat & gear (a life jacket & whistle are required by law). FUNDRAISERS

Car Wash: The Barnwell High School Lady Warhorse Basketball Team will host a car wash on Friday, June 29 at Advanced Auto (10630 Dunbarton Blvd., Barnwell) beginning at 9 a.m. A portion of the proceeds will be used to assist Lady Warhorses Anajae James and Maleah Williams who will be traveling to Louisville, KY to compete in front of college coaches against other athletes from across the nation. The remainder of the funds will be used to assist the team with team camp and other expenses during the upcoming season.

Diaper Drive: Pastor Pamela Richards of Beulah Baptist Church of Beldoc will sponsor a Diaper Drive for single parents in the Allendale/Barnwell area from June 25 until July 25. The distribution date will be held on Saturday, July 28 from 10 a.m. until noon at the church.

Toy Drive: A toy drive in memory of Jenna Bodiford is underway through August 4. All toys must be new and stuffed animals must have a tag. Drop off toys at AgSouth in Allendale, All Teased Up on the Circle in Barnwell, Palmetto Dentistry in Barnwell, and Hair Design Studio in Barnwell. Donations will also be collected in the IGA parking lot on Monday, July 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Fuller Park on Wednesday, August 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

EDUCATION

BHS Registration: Parking decal is $25. Seniors have the option to personalize their parking space for an additional $25 fee. All fees must be paid with cash or money order. Registration will be held Monday, August 6 for freshmen, Tuesday, August 7 for sophomores, Wednesday, August 8 for juniors, and Thursday, August 9 for seniors. All dates are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking fees and outstanding balances may be paid at this time. All fees must be paid in order to park on campus. Freshmen are not allowed to drive to school. Summer hours for the guidance office are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday, except July 3, to process transcripts. The guidance office will return on August 6.

BHS Freshman Orientation: Freshman Orientation will be held Sunday, August 12 from 3-4 p.m. in the Barnwell High School Cafeteria.

Summer of Numbers: Boost math skills this summer in five minutes per day: online at bedtimemath.org or through the Bedtime Math app on your smartphone or tablet. Pick up a log at the Barnwell Library, complete it and receive a special prize.

Shark Week: Stop by during the week of July 2 - 7 to complete the shark week scavenger hunt. Special prizes to all who finish.

Retro Make and Take: Tuesday, July 17 at 7 p.m. Try a “kiddie” craft like Shrinky Dinks, Perler beads, and more! Open to teens and adults.

Lip Sync Battle: Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m. Perform your favorite song. Prizes awarded! For teens and adults.

Harry Potter’s Birthday Celebration: Thursday, July 19 at 4 p.m. Celebrate Harry's birthday. Join for an interactive showing of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Rated PG. Rising 6th to 12th graders.

Summer Celebration Lock-In: Friday, July 27 from 6-10 p.m. Teens that complete the Summer Reading requirements can join us for board games, video games, and pizza. Pre-registration by July 24 required.

Savannah River Ecology Lab: Monday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. See local wildlife up close! Rising 5k to 5th graders.

Preposterous Puppet Show: Monday, July 16 at 10:30 a.m. Bringing your favorite books to life! Rising 5k to 5th graders.

Make Your Own Musical Instruments: Monday, July 23 at 10:30 a.m. We'll make castanets, harmonicas, rain sticks, and more! Rising 5K to 5th graders.

Dance Party 2018: Monday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m. Rising 5K to 5th graders that complete the Summer Reading requirements can join us to celebrate! Pre-registration by July 26 required.

Sing-a-long Movie: Bring your favorite snack. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Friday, July 20 at 3:30 p.m. Watch “The Lion King” ("A lion cub prince is tricked by a treacherous uncle into thinking he caused his father’s death and flees into exile in despair, only to learn in adulthood his identity and his responsibilities." Rated G)

Solar S’Mores: Thursday, June 28 at 4 p.m. Build your own solar-powered oven. Rising 6th to 12th graders.

Teen Anime & Manga Club: Thursday, June 28 and Thursday, July 26 from 7-8:30 p.m. Share in the love of Japanese comics and animation. All teens in grades 7-12 are welcome. Snacks provided.

Potluck Book Club: Tuesday, July 31 at 4 p.m. Discussing Louise Penny’s, “How the Light Gets In “. Snacks provided.

Preschool Story Time: Thursdays, June 28 and July 12, 19 and 26 at 11 a.m. Stories, songs and more for ages 3-5. Stay after for 30 minutes of free play.

LEGO Club: Wednesday, July 18 at 4 p.m. We supply the LEGOs and you bring your imagination! We’ll also have the Magna Tiles and K’Nex.

Movie at Lunch: Tuesday, July 24 at 3:30 p.m. Watch “I Can Only Imagine”. ("The inspiring and unknown true story behind MercyMe’s beloved, chart topping song that brings ultimate hope to so many is a gripping reminder of the power of true forgiveness.") Bring your lunch and the library will have coffee and dessert ready. Rated PG.

Tech Help Tuesdays: Tuesday, July 10 and 24 from 11 a.m. to noon. Bring your own device to learn how to use ABBE's Digital Library. We also assist with other limited computer and internet questions.
